🎬 SOORYAVANSHAM: THE FILM THAT FLOPPED IN CINEMAS BUT BECAME AN ETERNAL TV CLASSIC! Released on 21 May 1999, Sooryavansham remains one of the most fascinating films in Amitabh Bachchan's career. But its journey was anything but ordinary. At the time, Amitabh Bachchan was going through one of the toughest phases of his career. His company, ABCL, had suffered a major financial crisis, and his comeback films had failed to revive his box-office dominance. Then came Sooryavansham, in which he played a challenging double role — Thakur Bhanu Pratap Singh, a strict and powerful father, and Heera Thakur, his humble, illiterate son. What went wrong with the film? • The film was a Hindi remake of the successful 1997 Tamil film Surya Vamsam, but its Hindi adaptation failed to recreate the original's theatrical magic. • Director Vikraman, who had directed the Tamil original, reportedly backed out after shooting for a few days because he was unhappy with Amitabh playing both father and son. • The director later felt that the Hindi version looked too much like a South Indian film and that its casting could have been different. • Amitabh was 56–57 years old when he played the young son Heera, which some viewers found difficult to accept. • The film also released just a week before the hugely successful Biwi No. 1, which affected its theatrical prospects. Some fascinating behind-the-scenes facts: • Rekha provided the dubbing voice for BOTH female leads — Soundarya and Jayasudha. An unusual casting detail that many viewers still don't know! • The makers had reportedly considered casting Amitabh's real-life son Abhishek Bachchan in the younger role. • Soundarya played the female lead opposite Heera. Tragically, she died in a plane crash in 2004, aged just 31. • Amitabh later admitted that he was surprised by the film's enormous television popularity. He even recalled Soundarya as a talented and highly professional actress. What happened at the box office? The film was declared a FLOP despite its impressive cast. Box Office India lists its budget at approximately ₹7 crore and India net collections at around ₹6.67 crore. But television changed everything! Sony Max's repeated telecasts turned Sooryavansham into a household name. The famous poisonous kheer scene became an internet meme, and Heera Thakur became a character almost every Indian television viewer knows. Interestingly, Amitabh himself once expressed surprise at the film becoming one of his most-watched movies. A film that failed to make a mark in theatres eventually became one of Indian television's most recognisable classics. Sometimes, a film's real success story begins long after its theatrical release!
