Released in 1980, Do Aur Do Paanch remains one of the most entertaining collaborations between two legendary Bollywood actors.
Directed by Rakesh Kumar, the film brought together Amitabh Bachchan, Shashi Kapoor, Hema Malini and Parveen Babi.
THE STORY
Amitabh Bachchan plays Vijay, while Shashi Kapoor plays Sunil. Both are rival thieves who repeatedly cross paths during their criminal assignments.
They are separately hired to kidnap Bittu, the son of a wealthy businessman, Rai Bahadur Mathur (Shreeram Lagoo).
Both disguise themselves as schoolteachers, adopting the names Ram and Laxman, and join the same school.
But things take an unexpected turn when they become emotionally attached to the child and fall in love with two women.
Vijay falls for Anju (Parveen Babi), while Sunil falls for Shalu (Hema Malini).
What follows is a hilarious combination of mistaken identities, rivalry, romance, action and comedy.

INTERESTING BEHIND-THE-SCENES INCIDENTS & TRIVIA
1. During the shooting at Mumbai's famous Sea Rock Hotel, Amitabh Bachchan reportedly suffered an asthma attack. Shashi Kapoor came to his rescue and helped him. According to a behind-the-scenes account, this incident strengthened Amitabh's admiration for Shashi, and he subsequently wanted Shashi as his co-star in two-hero films.
2. Amitabh Bachchan once shared a hilarious memory from the film's days. While wearing bell-bottom trousers, he went to watch a movie in a theatre when a rat climbed inside his trousers! He himself recalled the incident while celebrating 43 years of Do Aur Do Paanch in 2023.
3. The film's opening credits featured animated versions of Amitabh and Shashi, designed in the visual style of the famous Pink Panther cartoons. Quite an unusual touch for an Indian film of that era!
4. The donkey-costume sequence in the song Prem Se Humko Jeene Do remains one of the film's memorable comic moments.

Despite its impressive star cast, the film did not become a box-office success according to the available historical verdict.
Sometimes, a film doesn't need to be a box-office blockbuster to become a memorable part of cinema history.
