Pete Alonso would’ve signed with the Savannah Bananas if they offered the most years and cash. His "love" for the Mets was fake—he only cares about personal stats, not winning.
And the fans crying over him while booing their own team are total clowns, just like Pete. 🤡🍌 #Mets
Same. We have season tickets. I was there on Monday. Sat yesterday out and will yay home tonight as well. Disgusted with all this.
I don’t know how to say this but after these two games against the orioles. I feel sad to be a Mets fan.
And not because of the organization but because of our fans.
Just an insane feeling right now.

Nor do I.
The Mets offered Alonso an extension of $158M over 7 years. He turned it down. There was no market for him when he took the one-year deal from the Mets. He then signed the big deal with Baltimore when there was no bidding war. He’ll probably finish his career there in irrelevance. He’s a top notch power hitter, but I don’t get the love affair with him.

I recognize that this team has given me many reasons to be embarrassed to be a Mets fan, but these past two nights have easily been the most embarrassed I've ever been to call myself a Mets fan.
💯
I’ve never seen a crowd this large so confident they are right about a decision so simple that most front offices avoid.
Last night and tonight, fans made it sound like the Mets committed some unforgivable sin by letting Pete Alonso leave. That is simply being far out of touch with reality. The Mets declined to buy the back half of a first baseman’s career, which is a positive thing that deserves praise, not hate. Only one team in baseball offered him a five-year contract. That is not an accident.
There was a lot of pressure for the Mets to sign Alonso last offseason. Many GMs don’t make these tough, unpopular decisions even when they are much needed and could potentially make a massive impact on the future. To think this is a fireable offense is so ridiculous and backwards it's unreal.
Alonso is 31 and in year one of a five-year deal. Year one is the safest year, the risk is everything after it. Pete was not a player walking in his prime. He's at the start of the window where first basemen get paid for production they may not continue giving you.
The years where he'll likely be most productive, like 2026, are not the years this Mets roster is built to contend. 2026 is a bridge year. Every move made was a temporary move, trying to compete but not at the expense of the future. The focus is clearly on the future with all these young players.
The next core is coming. You do not want $31 million a year sitting on the books when that bat starts to slip and the money is needed elsewhere when they're actually contending for a World Series. That is the number one thing that holds teams back and hurts them as they enter their contention window.
TLDR: Mets fans are wrong about this. The chants are loud and still extremely stupid. Stearns made the right call and is a great POBO.

.@MetsBooth Hey Maj. We Spectors are on the Field Level today but trying to listen as always. Any idea what’s up with the “listen live” feature in the Ballpark app? We got nuthin’.
Awwww! Thanks for the shoutout, @HowieRose!! We are here—just not in Section 318. But—as usual—we are LISTENING!! @MetsBooth #opera #placidodomingo
Okay. I’m gonna call it before @HowieRose does: “Oba-La-Di! Oh, Bleday! Life goes on…” @MetsBooth @KeithRaad #bleday #mets #reds
Okay, @MetsBooth. The Figaro duet totally made up for missing playing Gene Krupa last week. Bit of pop culture trivia: that duet was used to great effect in Shawshank. Thank you, @HowieRose for sharing with us the FULL unexpurgated version of how you ended up at the opera. Once.
I’m counting on you, Mag, at the end of this inning… 🎶🎵@MetsBooth #genekrupa
I loved this a year ago, and I loved remembering it again today! How cool that must have felt, if a little strange! Great call, Howie, and hopefully another “fairy tale” season will come along soon! #mets
