Mehdi Hasan's Zeteo has a new documentary out on AIPAC, asking whether the "Israel lobby" is really an agent of a foreign power. A shadowy, fabulously rich network pulling Washington's strings: it's one of the most enduring antisemitic tropes of our age. So I did Mehdi a favour and checked the numbers. Over the past decade, Israel ranked tenth for registered foreign lobbying spending, behind China, Japan, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the UAE and even the Marshall Islands. AIPAC came 191st among Washington's lobbies. The entire pro-Israel lobbying category spent less than gun-rights groups, and a fraction of what the drug companies spend. Elections? AIPAC's super PAC spends serious money. But it competes in a system where outside groups have poured in nearly $2 billion this cycle, and six organisations have each spent over $60 million. Strangely, Zeteo seems far less curious about Riyadh, Beijing or Doha. The truth about the Israel lobby. Link to my new column here 👇 jakewallissimons.com

In my latest article in Tablet Magazine I make the case for the alliance with Israel that the NatCon conference in Jerusalem should have made. I make the case for a real America First position on Israel: treating a capable ally as a force multiplier against the China-Russia-Iran-North Korea axis. Weakening the partnership doesn’t make America safer. It hands adversaries openings and erodes U.S. influence. I also argue that the right’s growing flirtation with antisemitic conspiracy theories (Carlson, Fuentes, etc) divides Trump's coalition and substitutes ethnic score-settling for strategic judgment. It undercuts the equal citizenship the Founders actually defended.

“On October 21, President of the Republic of Türkiye Recep Tayyip Erdoğan made a phone call to President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev. During the phone conversation, the heads of state discussed bilateral relations between Azerbaijan and Türkiye, as well as regional and global issues. President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan expressed confidence that cooperation between Azerbaijan and Türkiye, based on brotherly relations, would continue to reach new heights. The Turkish President once again congratulated President Ilham Aliyev on the 35th anniversary of the restoration of Azerbaijan’s state independence and invited him to attend the 13th Summit of the Organization of Turkic States, to be held in Ankara. President Ilham Aliyev thanked President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan for the phone call and his congratulations on the 35th anniversary of the restoration of Azerbaijan’s state independence. In turn, President Ilham Aliyev expressed confidence that the brotherly relations between Azerbaijan and Türkiye would continue to develop successfully.”

Cold-hearted 🖤 Copenhagen pushes elderly in retirement homes to eat little meat to cut CO₂ Can they please get more meat on, say, their birthday? Important to understand where many Western countries are at in terms of energy security: the UK had a local natural gas field close to ready to provide gas to homes and businesses, but did not allow it to operate due to "climate concerns." Instead, imported gas from foreign countries. And, complain about the rise in gas prices due to the Iran war.
BREAKING: UK government approves the Jackdaw natural gas field in the North Sea — the project, which is effectively built already, was previously quashed over its climate impact. Next test for London is the approval of the Rosebank oilfield project.
