Vittorio De Sica on why he felt the need to make 'Shoeshine' (1946): "During the war, we had been fed nothing but hypocrisy and lies, and suddenly it became so very important for us to tell the truth. That's what the neo realist movement was all about—telling the truth. I can't tell you what it was like when I began making ‘Shoeshine' (1946). I felt such… happiness!" ('The Victory Of Vittorio De Sica', Guy Flatley, The NY Times, 1972)

a mostly gripping chamber piece of post-war unrest, full of the rage, paranoia, and pride in men who never came back whole, colliding at a hotel in a Florida hurricane. bogart feels softer than usual, with robinson perfect as the gangster whose aura’s faded. bacall, iconic.
Key Largo (1948) - John Huston tonight will be our second movie for noirvember. bogie & bacall, my third movie where they're paired up, and i love edward g. robinson, solely from knowing him from double indemnity. this feels like a major blindspot that i'm finally crossing off.

"[Although 'L'avventura' (1960)] has no plot, it isn’t boring. I like taking your time meandering with the music. There’s so much that isn’t said in a look. I like observing things. I’m not interested in a lot of dialogue." --- Sofia Coppola
