Pay tributes to LK Advani ji on his 99th birthday. One of the greatest symbols of probity in public life, he maintained his public honour throughout his political career. It was he who put Hindutva or unalloyed nationalism on national map by coining such masterly terms as ‘ pseudo-secularism’ that so sharply exposed the pro-Muslim policies of the Cong & gave vent to the suppressed aspirations of the Majority community. In effect he reminded the Majority community that after having given Pakistan to Muslims on the demand of a section of Indian Muslims why Bharat should tolerate pro-Muslim appeasement policies & why should it not demand equal treatment for all. But two blunders dented his image : 1. Going to mausoleum of MA Jinnah in Karachi in 2005 & praising him - praising the same man whose Pakistan movement forced Advani ji to flee Sindh & come to Bharat as a refugee. It shocked his supporters. 2. His attempt to act tough with Ram Temple movement leaders which earned him the wrath of respected saint Ramchandra Paramhansa whose bad vibes for Advani ji before his death in 2003 are believed to have turned into divine retribution for the veteran BJP leader. Late VHP leader Giriraj Kishore in fact alleged that Paramhansa had died due to the shock he felt after meeting Advani ji. But Advani ji’s commitment to value-based politics remains an inspiration for today politicians. I am reminded of my father’s comment which he made when I was a child : ‘ Advani is one of the cleanest politicians and a most inspiring figure”. Another instance regarding him involves present PM @narendramodi . I wrote a stinging piece against Advani ji in @IndiaToday magazine in 2005 while covering the adverse reaction against him after his praise of Jinnah. After that when I happened to talk to Gujarat CM Modi ji, he told me that while evaluating Advani ji no one can overlook his commitment to clean public life & that i should have factored that while writing the article. Once travelling with Advani ji in a chopper in 1998, I had a candid talk with him when he revealed something that proved the strong character & honesty of former PM Morarji Desai while heading the Janata Party Govt in 1979-80. Advani ji said when the socialist bloc ( Madhu Limaye ) in Janata Party started putting pressure on Morarji bhai to get rid of the old Jana Sangh leaders from the Govt & party citing their RSS connection, Morarji bhai refused to buckle under pressure. Advani ji told me : “ When me , Vajpayee ji & Nanaji Deshmukh offered to step down to save the Janata Party Govt, Morarji bhai bluntly refused saying we have done no wrong so as to resign & that he ( Morarji bhai) will choose to resign as PM rather than submit to the unjustifiable pressure of the socialists.”
