Heads up: We’re seeing a new scam targeting victims of domestic violence. Scammers search court filings, then call victims of domestic violence and pretend to be law enforcement or court officials. They use details from the case to sound legitimate. Then they ask for money, claiming they'll keep the victim safe by getting a court order or electronic monitoring for the abuser. It’s a scam. No law enforcement or court official will call you and demand money as part of a domestic violence case. Hang up and call law enforcement. And if you’re a victim of abuse, here is a list of organizations across North Carolina that can actually help: doa.nc.gov/divisions/women-y…

Hey Gov Ops…official NC House committee platforms and state legislative resources used to campaign against or vilify candidates of the opposing political party raises a serious legislative-ethics question and may constitute an impermissible use of official resources. Ethics101.

Tomorrow morning, the state will send voters their absentee ballots. The very same morning, the State Board of Elections will vote on memos that the public has not seen that could change how election administrators do their jobs. This State Board has had more than a year to plan for this year’s election, and administering elections is its only job. Voters need transparency from Dave Boliek’s Board of Elections so they can have faith in our elections process.

A 59 year old mother and Wake County substitute teacher, a completely legal resident of the United States with a valid green card, was lured into an ambush by ICE agents, arrested, denied adequate food, and transferred to a Georgia immigration prison. Right now, she is being illegally imprisoned by the Trump administration without any valid charges. Yet again, a lawless paramilitary gang is targeting legal residents due to the color of their skin. This is disgusting and needs to end.

Border Patrol and ICE should do their jobs to make sure our borders are secure and violent criminals here illegally are deported. Both organizations need real accountability and should not be operating a detention facility in North Carolina. They are killing and detaining American citizens, including people with no criminal records and it must stop.

The new Republican majority on the North Carolina State Board of Elections are considering adoption of a new rule at their meeting today in Raleigh that would allow a simple majority of each county's board of elections to throw out any mail-in ballot over any kind of technicality. Examples: a voter puts their ballot in the wrong enclosed envelope, checks the wrong box, or makes a smudge on the paper. The Republican majority on their county board of election could throw out your vote. Currently, throwing out a mail-in ballot for violations requires a unanimous, bipartisan vote by the county board. This change would make it a partisan vote. Every county board of elections in North Carolina has a Republican majority today, so in effect, this would mean allowing those Republican members to decide which mail-in votes will count.

Fun fact: Democratic Rep. Julie Von Haefen and most of the Democratic caucus has introduced this exact measure every year in the NC state legislature for the last 5 years running. Every time, @mikefor35's Republican leadership has killed it without a hearing. Only once it was introduced by a male Republican at high risk of losing his seat was it even allowed to be heard in committee. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Removing the tax on diapers, wipes, and feminine hygiene products is a simple policy proposal that would go a long way toward helping families. (Prenatal vitamins and OTC meds won't be in the version presented tomorrow due to conflicts with Streamlined Sales Tax policy.)

"Is @DukeEnergy the biggest spender in North Carolina politics because they have deep sentimental concern for good policy, or is it because they like making money?"
Duke Energy spends a lot of money each election cycle to help its preferred candidates win, and, once they’re in office, uses lobbying to influence them to support preferential policies.  buff.ly/0TpKfyP

[NEW] Follow the Money in North Carolina Politics The campaign finance reporting system for politicians in North Carolina is notoriously poor. Not only is it 30 years old, but it's difficult to search, and even harder to make meaningful connections between what you find. (This is by design.) That's why, today, the Carolina Forward team is releasing the NC Campaign Finance Tracker. We're making campaign finance reporting easier and clearer than it's ever been in North Carolina. Check it out here: NCMoneyTracker.org

The NC Utilities Commission — at Duke Energy’s request (according to security) — is barring anyone with an electronic device from entering the hearing room for Duke’s public rate case proceedings in Lumberton. Including media, who have been turned away. #ncpol

Senator Hagerty says 80% of Americans support voter ID — so what’s the problem with the SAVE Act? Here’s the problem Senator Durbin already explained on the Senate floor: The SAVE Act doesn’t accept driver’s licenses. 50% of Americans don’t have passports. 80% of Americans support voter ID. Zero percent of Americans support accidentally disenfranchising themselves. The people most likely to lack passports: — The elderly — The poor — Rural Americans — Young first-time voters — Military families who move frequently The people most likely to have passports: — Wealthy Americans No one is defending illegal voting. The question is why a voter ID bill was written in a way that disqualifies the most common form of American ID. Senator Hagerty doesn’t want to answer that. Neither does anyone else who wrote it.

Tonight marks a turning point in NC. Voters in HD106 chose a future where working families thrive. For 15 years, extremists in Raleigh froze wages at $7.25, slashed taxes, and empowered Duke Energy. Tonight, North Charlotte said: enough is enough. Thank you HD106! 💜
