Amy Acton letting Vivek Ramaswamy go to voicemail is a lesson for women. You don’t owe people who mistreat you reconciliations, forgiveness or platitudes. You certainly don’t owe people who enable your abuser anything. You owe yourself peace. 🥺

I have been holding my tongue about something that happened during the Ohio gubernatorial race. I refused to speak while the election was underway because I did not want my words mistaken for an attempt to influence anyone’s vote. But now that the election is over, I have something to say. For nearly twenty years, my ministry has taken me among the homeless, the abused, the exploited, and the forgotten. I have sat with victims of sexual violence and witnessed the lifelong wounds of childhood trauma. What Vivek Ramaswamy’s campaign did to Amy Acton was among the most morally repulsive things I have witnessed in American politics. They took a woman whose stepfather was indicted for raping her when she was twelve years old and featured her mother, from whom she had been estranged for nearly fifty years, in a political advertisement attacking her credibility. The advertisement challenged Acton’s account of her childhood without mentioning the sexual abuse allegations or the circumstances of that estrangement. When people expressed their horror, the campaign defended it. Imagine examining another person’s childhood suffering and fractured family relationships, then deciding those wounds might help win an election. Anyone who has worked with survivors of childhood sexual abuse understands the painful realities of denial, betrayal, shame, and estrangement. A child growing into a successful adult does not erase what happened. Nor does a parent’s denial make that suffering disappear. I find it equally disturbing that an elderly mother, whom Acton herself described as unwell, was brought into this spectacle. Whatever her own struggles or responsibility for the past, exploiting that fractured relationship was grotesque. To everyone who defended this, consider the message you sent to survivors. To the young woman whose family refuses to believe her. To the man who has carried the shame of childhood abuse for forty years. To the frightened child who has yet to tell anyone. What did you teach them about the value of their suffering? I am a priest. I believe in repentance, forgiveness, and redemption. But none of those things requires me to pretend that deliberate cruelty is anything less than a grave moral failure. Your political allegiance does not absolve you of moral responsibility. You do not get to set aside your conscience during an election and retrieve it afterward. If your loyalty requires you to defend the exploitation of a childhood sexual abuse survivor, your loyalty has become an idol. And if your conscience cannot recognize the wrong here, examine what political tribalism has done to it. This is not about Republicans or Democrats. We have a choice as a people: continue excusing cruelty from our preferred political camp, or summon the courage to condemn it wherever it appears. Amy Acton deserved better. Every survivor who watched this unfold deserved better. And God help us if we have reached the point where winning an election matters more than protecting the dignity of a wounded human being.

What any knowledgeable person understands about undocumented immigrants in America is that “extending mercy where appropriate” should include and apply to the far majority of USimmigrants. The immigrant fear and hate of the last decade is rooted in profound lies about them.
Yes, happy to explain. I don’t think it’s wise to let your opinion of an entire immigration policy be dictated by outlier cases, tragic cases, or sad stories. I also support the second amendment even when there are tragic cases of gun violence. I support ICE and I believe mass deportations are necessary. I believe in law and order and I believe in justice. So does Samuel Sey. I don’t fault ICE for doing its job. I also believe in helping friends when you can, and also believe that mercy is sometimes appropriate. I know Samuel—he’s a good man of integrity. He has made good faith effort to file the right paperwork and comply with the law. He didn’t deceive or purposefully break the law. He would make an excellent American citizen. I hope he can become one someday. There are many other similar cases, I’m sure. It doesn’t change my opinion. All we can do is support justice as well as we can, and extend mercy where appropriate to the best of our ability. You might find this inconsistent, but I don’t. It’s just part of living in a messy world.

Thr conservative Christians who are still standing with Samuel Sey are doing so because they believe he is a good man, a Christian man, a family man, even a fellow conservative, certainly not a criminal. For whatever reason they can't make the leap between their friends and the hundreds of thousands of people who are just like him. They can't see that these are also good people who made decisions about jobs, family, safety, and just didn't fill out the right paperwork. They can't imagine that these other people are also good. When I was in graduate school, I met a couple who stressed out at the possibility that immigration wanted to deport the wife. She came here on a student visa, fell in love and now, was trying to stay here legally with her husband. There was no crime but according to them, they were being treated with suspicion and found the whole ordeal stressful and scary.

“Stop asking bin about neul” even though every time someone does, he talks AT LENGTH about him. And he doesn’t have to. He COULD give a shorter answer and brush off questions if he wanted, but he’s always so excited and happy to talk about his literal best friend/soulmate so…

addendum, the republican position on this is that 12 year old amy acton was a malicious liar and ALSO probably a slut who had it coming
the modern republican party is ideologically committed to supporting child abusers even when doing so only harms them politically. they genuinely agree with this woman that her 12 year old daughter was a malicious liar, and see spreading this message as of vital importance

There are two sorts of Christians, those who prioritize the mercy shown by Christ and reinterpret the Old Testament accordingly and those who prioritize the wrath of God in the Old Testament and reinterpret the New Testament accordingly. Since we are followers of Christ, it seems clear to me which is preferable. Look how the message of the Gospel becomes diluted and impotent when you do the latter. One of the citations in *favor* of the death penalty here is John 19:10. “Then saith Pilate unto him, Speakest thou not unto me? knowest thou not that I have power to crucify thee, and have power to release thee?” To cite this as evidence “God is pro-death penalty” is quite amazing. What a great perversion of the Gospel.
We must remember, God is Pro-death Penalty. Not because he wishes the wicked to perish, but because he delights in Justice. God's word is clear. someone reached out to me with information regarding one of the makers of that app that everyone is using. saying that a person involved with the app has previously said inappropriate things about the minor members of the group, as such I will be deleting any posts promoting it

However you feel about the migrants in custody, no Catholic should be deprived of the sacraments because of interference by the state. We’re a religion, not a meme. Jeeze.

And yet, somehow her victim has not come back from the dead, the victim's family's trauma is not healed, the country is no safer. It's kinda like the death penalty doesn't accomplish anything good.
Christa Pike has remained unconscious and on a ventilator at a hospital in the four days since her failed execution in Tennessee, and her prognosis might not be known for days more, one of her lawyers said Sunday. apnews.com/article/tennessee…

Shit like this is why people think Christians are cruel. My best friend in high school got pregnant. Her parents refused to entertain the idea of an abortion. They helped, her grandparents helped, everyone stepped up to help raise that baby. Because that’s what Christians do — we know each baby, regardless of how they were conceived, is a gift from God. How dare you disown your daughter for making a mistake from which God granted you a gift — a grandchild. You bring shame to the name of Christ when you behave this way. Seeing her family rally around her and step up was a seed for me that Catholics are just as family oriented as they say. That they do forgive mistakes. That the Church IS a hospital for sinners. That “go and sin no more” means you are welcomed into the fold no matter what you did as long as you repent. There is no biblical basis for disowning your child for having a child out of wedlock, you degenerate rube.

At 17? You need to safeguard your children better. If my daughter had a child out of wedlock she would be disowned.

One thing that always gets lost in this debate: School starts WAY too early. There's no law of nature requiring 5-year-olds to be in class by 7:30 a.m., which is obscene. Instead of making everyone endure 4:45 p.m. sunsets, just...send kids to school later.
No one likes changing the clock, me included, but Congress has enacted permanent Daylight Savings Time multiple times before and repealed it each time once Americans experienced absurdly late sunrises in the winter. Arkansans don’t want their kids going to school in the pitch dark, and I’ll always put Arkansas first.

A background study on most “criminals” and you realize that majority were first broken as children by their own parents until they became monsters from enduring so much pain and cruelty. This is why we really need proper protection laws and rehabilitation centers for children.
This is Christa Pike at 18 years old when she was sentenced to death. She begged for a hug from her mother before she died. She is now 50 and will be executed tonight for the heinous murder she committed with a boyfriend 32 years ago. Christa’s mother drank heavily and used drugs while she was pregnant with Christa resulting in brain damage which caused Christa’s bipolar disorder. Christa was born premature while her mother was drunk and spent weeks in an incubator. Her mother went back to work as a nurse. When Christa was 14 months old, she suffered a seizure. Her mother refused to leave the bar to take her to the hospital. After Christa was born, her mother left Christa and her brother without food, crawling in dog feces, while she drank with her boyfriends. She sent her children away to their grandmother when one of her many husbands didn’t want them around. Her grandmother allowed her boyfriend to orally sexually assault Christa before the child could talk until she began school. He locked her in a dark chicken coop with spiders crawling on her. When Christa’s school became concerned, her mother failed to follow up or prevent further abuse. Christa’s father stole her dog to give to one of his girlfriends when Christa was 6. Her mother allowed her boyfriends to beat Christa and twist her nipples. One beat Christa with a belt and sexually assaulted her. He forced her to watch pornography and look at graphic images. When Christa brought some of the images to school, they called her mother. She did nothing. When the boyfriend was arrested, her mother tried to deny it. When Christa was raped at 11 by a man in the neighborhood, her mother denied it until she developed an infection and the man was arrested. When Christa tried to commit suicide after that, a psychiatrist told her mother Christa was severely depressed and needed help. Her mother denied Christa further help and her bipolar disorder was not treated. Her mother told Christa to have her 20-something year old carnival boyfriend live with them when Christa was 14. She smoked pot with Christa and her boyfriend to bond. When Christa became pregnant by one of her mother’s lovers at 16, her mother convinced her to get an abortion telling her a healthy baby could not be born from rape. When Christa was raped at 17, one year to the day before she committed murder with her boyfriend, Christa’s mother didn’t care. But Christa was happy to see her mother in court during her trial and all she wanted was a hug. When Christa tried to introduce mitigating factors post-conviction, her mother said her daughter told lies and was a problem child since she was 8. Even then, her mother didn’t care about her child who only wanted a hug. Yes, Christa committed an extremely heinous murder at 18 and she will be put to death. But I just wanted to share a little bit of her story with you — especially for all of you rejoicing at her execution. #christapike

"I am glad Christa Pike is still alive. And two things can be true – I also wish her victim Colleen Slemmer was still alive. She too is a child of God. But another murder will not bring her back." This is a solid Christian case for abolishing the death penalty, and it is an excellent read.
