Honored & humbled. @nytimesbooks says #NoTurningBack “offers page after page of extraordinary reporting & many flashes of exquisitely descriptive prose… Abouzeid’s remarkable journalistic & literary work has given us, at last, a book worthy of the enormous tragedy that is Syria” xitter.cf/robertguinsler/status/…
What an incredible review in this Sunday’s @nytimesbooks for the amazing @Raniaab and her powerful NO TURNING BACK! google.com/amp/s/mobile.nyti…

This is really bad. Mada Masr and Lina Attalah have done vital reporting not only on Egypt but also on Gaza, Sudan, and Lebanon. Some of their work was unfortunately overlooked by international media, like their report on Gaza's aid traps, one of the best pieces I've read on it.
Mada Masr Editor-in-Chief Lina Attalah was fined LE3 million by the New Cairo Misdemeanor Court, which convicted her on charges of managing an unlicensed website, issuing an order for the website’s closure. Attalah was taken into custody after the issue of the ruling.
Tuesday’s session at the ninth circuit of the New Cairo Misdemeanor Court, presided over by judge Mohamed Mubarak, was temporarily suspended for deliberations after Attalah’s defense counsel requested time to review the case file.
After the court returned from deliberations, the judge ordered the courtroom cleared of everyone except Attalah and her defense counsel, the Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights’ executive director Hossam Bahgat, who was also present, told Mada Masr. The room then filled with plainclothes officers and guards, with a National Security Agency officer in attendance, he added.
The presiding judge and a Supreme State Security Prosecution representative returned to the session and the judge announced that the court has decided to stand by its rejection of all the procedural arguments presented by the defense, including requests to bring in any documentation or hear any witnesses.
The judge then asked the defense team to present its plea. The counsel insisted that it would not submit a plea as long as its requests were unanswered by the court.
The judge then abruptly asked for a lawyer unknown to any member of the defense counsel to be brought in, “in a move that astonished all those present,” said Bahgat, and announced that the court decided to appoint a lawyer for Attalah.
At that point, all members of the defense counsel cried out to reject the court’s appointment of a lawyer when the eight chosen lawyers were present. Attalah herself spoke to say she did not accept the court-appointed lawyer acting on her behalf, an objection the judge refused to have recorded in the session’s minutes.
"In an even more shocking move,” said Bahgat, the judge himself began to log down the requests of the court-appointed lawyer, without the lawyer having said a word. The judge then read out the conviction amid shouts and protests from the defense counsel.
The judge sentenced Attalah to the maximum possible penalty: a LE3 million fine, the closure of Mada Masr’s website and the confiscation of its property.
Security personnel then surrounded Attalah, lifted her off the ground and took her out of the courtroom, where she remains in custody in the courthouse.

🚨 “He was blown to pieces right before my eyes. His schoolbag was still on his shoulder.”
Israeli forces killed 14-year-old Palestinian student Mohammed Abu Hammad in a drone strike on Al-Baraka Street, south of Deir al-Balah in central Gaza shortly after he returned from school.
Mohammed had stopped at his father's shop to look after it while his father ran an errand. “He hadn't even been sitting in the chair for five minutes,” Ahmed Muhareb told Drop Site's Mohamed Ahmed. “They fired a missile at the boy, while his schoolbag was still on his back.”
At the hospital, people held up Mohammed's bloodstained schoolbag and notebooks, pointing to the shrapnel that had pierced them. His father wept over his son's body. “I swear, I was just talking to him,” he cried. “Mohammed was the one I depended on.”
“This is a child. What did he do wrong?” Mohammed's sister, Malak Abu Hammad, said. Questioning the ceasefire, she asked, “Do they even know God, to be talking about a ceasefire?”
“Is it not enough that you've forced us to live in tents? You've forced us to live in hunger and poverty. Why are you killing us?” Muhareb asked.
Several other students were wounded in the attack, which also killed another Palestinian, the Palestinian Ministry of Education said. At least six Palestinians have been killed in Israeli attacks across Gaza since Saturday morning.

To be clear, the only reason I was able to reach Heidi was because young Palestinians provided cover with rocks against machine-gun- and tear-gas-wielding settlers and soldiers. It’s those kids, not the settler terrorists, who the IDF was hunting after the attack.

NEW: “They decide who enters."
To leave or enter the isolated villages in Israel-occupied south Lebanon – some of the only villages still populated – residents need Israel's approval, and must rely on UN-escorted civilian convoys.
But UNIFIL’s mandate ends in three months. No replacement is on the horizon. And residents are grappling with what that will mean for them.
We joined them on one of the civilian convoys to Debel. It took 35 vehicles four hours and three checkpoints to get there. This was what our journey looked like.
A CNN investigation has found that while Jared Kushner acted as a key Middle East peace negotiator, his private equity firm held the largest stake in an Israeli company backing businesses tied to Israel's military campaign in Gaza, including its largest arms manufacturer. cnn.it/4y0xe5x

New from @NadaOHomsi. Per UNIFIL:
• 30 Israeli military positions in south Lebanon
• Includes 8 fortified bases per map below; 3 new bases in 2026 (note: prior UNIFIL reports suggested 9 fortified bases)
NEW: Unifil has counted nearly 30 Israeli military positions across south Lebanon - including eight fortified bases. Revealing Israeli entrenchment in Lebanese territory, even as US-mediated negotiations for Israeli withdrawal/Hezb disarmament/LAF control prod on.
[Three of the eight fortified bases are new from 2026. The remaining 5 were established in 2024.]

🚨 BREAKING :At least 8 Palestinians have been killed, 13 injured, and 60 civilians, including children and entire families, remain missing after a residential building collapsed west of Gaza City.
The building had been severely weakened by previous Israeli bombardment and was being used by families as shelter.
Civil Defense teams continue searching for survivors and recovering those trapped beneath the rubble, amid a critical shortage of rescue equipment.

In paragraph 5, the Post explains why its own headline is misinformation.
Breaking news: The Trump administration is preparing a $2.8 billion sale of 2,000-pound bombs to Israel, the largest single sale of the controversial munitions in recent years, a U.S. official told The Post. wapo.st/4Ae8VTH
Gaza is still bleeding and being bombed during what the world insists is a ‘ceasefire.’ “At least 6 families, including many children, are believed buried beneath the rubble.”
🚨 BREAKING: At least 60 Palestinians are dead or missing after a previously damaged multi-story building collapsed in Gaza’s Industrial Area, Al Araby’s correspondent reports. Members of at least six families, including many children, are believed buried beneath the rubble. At least 11 deaths have been confirmed so far.
Israel, with U.S. backing, continues to block the entry of adequate tents and mobile homes, leaving displaced Palestinians with little choice but to shelter in bomb-damaged buildings. It also blocks heavy machinery needed to reach people trapped beneath the rubble.

Israel’s attacks on Lebanon have killed over 4,000 and displaced over 1 million people. Under this pressure, any health-care system would struggle. But in Lebanon, as in Gaza, medical workers are themselves targets, too. Since March 2, the World Health Organization has documented attacks that killed 135 health-care workers and injured 405 more.
“The paramedics Israel is targeting in Lebanon are volunteers — jeopardizing their lives not to earn a living, but to help in their spare time,” writes Mary Turfah. “Many of them have day jobs or are enrolled in university. They work on rotation." The risks they’re taking are clear. And they are offered the option to leave. Very few of them do.
As a doctor with family members who have been wounded in Lebanon by Israel’s bombs, Turfah wanted to visit the paramedics doing this vital work, and ask them why they risk their lives. “We started on this path to help people,” a 24-year-old medic named Hussein told her. “As much as we’re under threat, if I leave and someone else leaves and someone else leaves, who is going to rescue people?”
