LET THE PEOPLE OF FOLKESTONE, HYTHE AND ROMNEY MARSH HAVE THEIR SAY @therealdavidwi1 Having watched Politics South East today, I was left wondering how closely some of our politicians are listening to the people they represent. Listening to Mike Tapp labour mp, a Liberal Democrat representative from Eastbourne and the Green Party’s Mike Blakemore, calling both myself and our Kcc leader racist this morning, I certainly did not feel they spoke for residents who oppose the council’s decision to declare our district a “District of Sanctuary”. A vote in the council chamber is not a mandate from every household in our district. That is why I launched an e-petition challenging this decision. My Facebook post has attracted more than 62,000 interactions, and over 200 people have contacted me directly saying they could not complete the petition because the website kept kicking them out. Those interactions are not petition signatures, but the response shows why residents must have a proper opportunity to be heard. I contacted Democratic Services, who have agreed that I can also organise a paper petition. If you have struggled to sign online, please contact me for details of the paper version. You can also send me a separate signed statement. Write your full name and postcode, followed by: “I oppose Folkestone and Hythe District Council’s motion to declare the district a District of Sanctuary. I do not support welcoming people who enter the UK illegally into Kent.” Sign and date it, then take a clear photograph or screenshot and send it to me by private message. Please do not put your personal details in the public comments. I will submit these statements alongside the petition, which already has more than 300 supporters. The council will determine which submissions meet its formal petition requirements. Residents deserve clear answers about what this declaration means, what commitments it creates and what it will cost. Our district. Our communities. Our right to be heard. If you agree please try and sign the petition go to the Folkestone and Hythe district council website…. Search e petition and follow the steps if you have trouble doing that please send your objection as above AND SHARE THIS POST! please

A simple message to the good people of Medway: if you would like your council run properly in a financially responsible and sustainable way, with secure levels of reserves and council tax charges decreasing year on year, please vote Reform next May. What a shambles Labour make of everything 👇 “The auditors have warned that Medway's financial position cannot continue as it is. Its reserves are critically low, borrowing is growing, and it will need enormous savings over the next few years.” localauthority.news/everythi…

An absolutely brilliant press conference today in Kent @Nigel_Farage & @ZiaYusufUK describing how in the first 100 days in government they will stop the boats. It will be a return to normality, a time when our borders were secure, our population was stable and we weren’t importing thousands of men who wish to do us harm.

We’ve discovered that foreign national prisoners have been ordering a certain book from our libraries here in Kent - it’s a handbook called ’Life in the United Kingdom: A Guide for new Residents'. And do you know what it’s guide for? Yes you’ve guessed it - passing the British citizenship test. I’ve written to our head of libraries to request that he immediately halts the provision of the book to all Kent prison libraries and puts an immediate stop on the ordering of the book from any external Kent libraries from inside Kent prisons. I do not believe that a Reform led county council should have any part in helping foreign nationals who’ve broken the law to pass their citizenship test. We don’t want them! 🇬🇧🩵Kent has Reform - Britain needs Reform 🩵🇬🇧

Well said. Everyone single Reform councillor is aghast at Folkestone & Hythe Council voting through its intention to become a “District of Sanctuary”. In Kent we are on the frontline of the invasion. We see the boats brought ashore every week. The vast majority of our residents does not want this. That’s why they voted Reform in such large numbers last year. In May they’ll get the chance to make their voices heard again. 🩵Vote Reform at every opportunity🩵
Replying to @therealdavidwi1
@therealdavidwi1 There have been times when I have nearly walked away from local politics. This week reminded me why I keep going. Stepping forward to represent your community can be daunting. I started on the town council, then stood for the district council. I began on the back benches, listening, learning how councils worked and finding out how to get things done for local people. I spent one term as a Conservative. But when I was expected to support parking meters along our high streets, I refused. I believed it was wrong for our residents and businesses, and I would not vote against them simply to keep my party happy. I was subsequently not asked to stand again, so I went independent. Back then, the Conservatives held an overwhelming majority on the council. There were disagreements and heated exchanges, but, in my experience, we could usually argue our positions without everything becoming personal. As an independent, I was sometimes laughed at or dismissed. I carried on anyway: dealing with local problems, working with officers and helping residents. That is where the real value of a councillor lies. As Labour and the Greens gained ground, I felt the atmosphere became increasingly hostile. Robust debate is part of politics. Personal humiliation should never be. Some of the remarks I experienced about my education and dyslexia were particularly hurtful. Dyslexia does not diminish someone’s intelligence, their commitment or their ability to serve their community. There were moments when my wife and family asked why I put myself through it. I asked myself the same question. Politics can be thankless, and the attacks take their toll. I came close to quitting. Since becoming a county councillor and cabinet member, I regularly work 60 hours a week. And let me tell you: you don’t do it for the money! If I put those same hours and that same effort into my own business, I could earn twice as much. I make that commitment because representing people properly takes time, hard work and a willingness to shoulder responsibility. But the response to my comments at this week’s Folkestone and Hythe District Council meeting has renewed my determination. I challenged the call for our district to become a “district of sanctuary” because I believe residents deserve proper consultation, clear answers about what any proposal would involve and an honest explanation of the costs. Compassion matters. So does responsibility to the people we were elected to represent. Residents struggling with housing, pensioners, veterans and families under pressure deserve to know how their needs will be met. The messages of support reminded me that there are people who want their concerns raised, even when doing so makes others uncomfortable. I will not be intimidated out of speaking for them. People from other parties are entitled to challenge me. I am equally entitled to challenge policies and attitudes that I believe put ideology ahead of local needs. Call my views unfashionable if you wish. I do this because I believe it is right. Next May, residents will have their say at the ballot box. And that brings me to the reason for this post: Reform UK wants to stand candidates in every seat across Folkestone, Hythe and Romney Marsh. We need local people willing to step forward. You do not need a privileged education or a lifetime in politics. You need commitment, common sense, a willingness to listen and the courage to stand up for your community. Join Reform UK. Get involved with your local group. Help us campaign, or consider standing yourself. We are local people who want to make a real difference.
