BREAKING: Three activists who once organised annual vigils to mark the 1989 Tiananmen crackdown crackdown have been sentenced to up to seven years and three months in prison.
In full: hongkongfp.com/2026/09/11/ho…
Appearing before a panel of designated judges at the West Kowloon Law Courts Building on Friday, Chow Hang-tung, Lee Cheuk-yan, and Albert Ho were handed the jail terms for inciting subversion under a Beijing-imposed national security law.
Lee received a jail sentence of seven years, Chow was jailed for seven years and three months and Ho – who pleaded guilty – received a sentence of five years and two months imprisonment.
The trio formerly led the Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements of China, a now-defunct activist group that held annual vigils to remember the Tiananmen dead. The Alliance itself was handed a fine of HK$1.5 million on Friday, to be paid within three months.

I am deeply concerned about the detention of HRDr Zhang Yi, arrested after showing a photo of the Dalai Lama during a visit to Sera Monastery in Lhasa. He remains detained on charges of “inciting separatism.”
Peacefully displaying the image of a religious leader cannot constitute a threat to national security. Separatism legislation must not be used to criminalize the exercise of freedom of expression, religion or belief, or legitimate human rights work.
I urge the Chinese authorities to review Zhang Yi’s detention and to release him immediately, given the serious concerns that his detention may be linked to the peaceful exercise of his right to defend human rights. Pending his release, his safety, due process guarantees, and access to his family and legal counsel must be fully respected.

I am receiving disturbing news about the imminent deportation of Chinese HRD, journalist and whistleblower Bai Zhaodong, from Thailand to China. He fled China in November 2023 having been persecuted and criminalized for exposing large scale corruption and financial fraud implicating officials. He remains detained in Bangkok, reportedly in poor health and without adequate medical care. Despite an ongoing resettlement process, his relocation to a safe third country has twice been obstructed. I urge the Thai authorities to immediately halt any deportation proceedings, facilitate his prompt relocation, and ensure his safety and access to adequate healthcare.

一、公布“六四”惨案真相;
二、对遇难者及其家属给予合理赔偿;

Close to half of the executions recorded in 2025 were the result of the intensification of highly punitive approaches in the “war on drugs”. Drug-related executions in China, Iran, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Singapore contributed to these numbers.
The death penalty has often been used by states as a show of power, and nowhere is this clearer than in the executions connected to drug offences.
However, there are still signs that the tide is changing – in 2025 Viet Nam was one of the countries that took steps away from the death penalty and abolished this cruel punishment for eight offences, including drug transportation.
