A study led by @pennvet’s Igor Brodsky and lab members Rina Matsuda and Daniel Sorobetea sheds light on a face-off in the intestines between the immune system and a bacterial pathogen whose family members cause gastrointestinal disease and the plague.

New paper out today: C. difficile exploits a host metabolite produced during toxin-mediated disease. We show that C. difficile eats sorbitol produced by the host during gut inflammation--one way the pathogen benefits from causing disease.

What an amazing report to wake up to! Pfizer vaccine provided 100% protection in 12-15 year olds (18 cases of infection in the placebo group, and 0 among the children who received the vaccine). The n is small, but gives me so much hope for school opening in the near future. A++

When choosing a thesis advisor, it’s natural to envision your best days, but important to think about your worst days.
Whose office do you want to walk into when your experiment failed, your manuscript is rejected, or you’re dealing with a family emergency?
Choose that person.

We thought B.1.1.7's increased infectiousness was due to higher viral load. New data from @NBA players and staff, with frequent sampling, suggests it's related to delayed clearance, longer duration of infections
