My wife came home from work, dropped her bag on the counter, and said: “I got the promotion. I’m moving to Chicago next month. You can come if you want.” Then she went upstairs to pack. I said: “Wait. We didn’t discuss this. What about my job? The kids’ school?” She rolled her eyes: “Don’t make this a big deal. You’ll figure it out. Or don’t.” That was the moment I realized our marriage was just logistics to her. So instead of arguing, I called my dad and asked if the kids and I could stay at his place for a while. Then I called a divorce lawyer. A week later, she came home to half-empty closets. She was furious. “You’re overreacting. I said you could come!” I said: “You announced, you didn’t ask. That’s not a partnership.” She laughed. “You’re not even going to fight for us?” I said: “This is something you wanted. Not me.” Then I told her my lawyer had the emails from her coworker. The one she’d been “working late” with for 8 months. She didn’t deny it. But what upset her most wasn’t getting caught. It was this: “You went through my stuff? Don’t you trust me?” Later, she admitted the real reason: “I outgrew you. I was done playing house years ago. The promotion just gave me an excuse.” We’d been married 11 years. A year later, the judge gave me primary custody and the house. She pays child support now. And honestly? I don’t have to shrink myself to fit her “plan” anymore either.
