Every evening of that Kolkata Test in 2016, once the dayโs play ended, Mohammed Shami did not head for team hotel. He went to a hospital and sat outside an ICU.
His daughter Aaira was 14 months old. A high fever and an asthma attack had left her struggling to breathe and doctors had admitted her mid-Test. Shami told no one. A few hours later he was back at ground, tying his laces for warmup.
Now he announced his retirement from Test cricket and that is the match I keep going back to.
that match was India's 250th Test at home, on a fresh pitch that still held the monsoon damp. Bhuvneshwar Kumar took the first innings 5er and applause. Shami took 6 for 116 in 36.1 overs, 3 in each innings, sort of figures nobody frames. On the last afternoon the old ball began to talk and Shami made it sing. Boult's top edge to Murali Vijay at slip ended it. India won by 178 runs and climbed to No. 1.
Kohli heard about the hospjtal afterwards. "I had no clue" he said. Shami's explanation was one sentence long: leaving a game unfinished felt like a sin.
I understand that sentence better when I think of Sahaspur, a small town in Amroha,Uttar Pradesh. A boy with pace there had to leave home just to find a coach and a decent net. For him a Test was the job,the thing a whole family bent itself around. Turning up was the one thing nobody could take from him.
Now the numbers, because they settle the argument. He finished with 229 Test wickets at strike rate just over 50 and very few fast bowlers reach 200 that close to a wicket every 8 overs.
At home he was even more sharper, he was taking a wicket every 42.6 balls, best of any Indian pacer with minimum 75 wickets on pitches that belonged to Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja. Those were demolishing batters at other end. Shami kept collecting wickets in same hours.
he was never the loud one. Kohli said as much, that Shami does not express himself in the open on the field. He let the seam talk: upright wrist, ball landing on same spot, late movement into the pads. Batters rarely heard him. They heard the rattling sound of stumps.
Test cricket has had bowlers who were quicker and a few who were prettier to watch. It has not had many who walked from floodlihhts of Eden Gardens to a hospital corridor and back and then bowled in morning as if nothing had happened.
A fast bowler is a flame that burns itself for others and Shami kept his lit through the longest night of his life and every season after it.
Happy Retirement Shami!

In 85th over at Sylhet, a ball from Jayden Seales reared off a length and thudded into Towhid Hridoy's ribs. physio jogged out. West Indies had new ball and only a tail to clean up and they waited for the wince that ends these stories. Hridoy took guard and pulled the next one for a single.
That exchange was the whole day. Bangladesh began it at 88 for 3 in reply to 356. Shadman Islam had been stretchered off with an ankle injury, so they were a wicket worse off than the scoreboard said. At 184 for 7 they trailed by 172.
then Hridoy did something close to absurd. He added 117 with Taijul Islam and 85 with Taskin Ahmed, 202 runs with his last 2 real partners, who made 34 between them. Bangladesh were all out for 386, a lead of 30. Hridoy was left on 242* from 359 balls, 62.69% of his sideโs total. He hit 11 sixes and 22 fours and scored 213 runs in the day, a Bangladesh record. Mushfiqur Rahimโs 219*, national best since 2018, went with a four off Warrican.
He farmed the strike brilliantly for 6 hours, shepherding Taijul through nearly two and a half of them, and hit Chase and Warrican down the ground only when the field invited it.
Some of that patience was learnt young. When he was 12, his family in Bogra mortgaged their farmland to pay a Dhaka academy that turned out to be a fraud. He nearly quit.
money was gone. So, for a while, was the boy's wish to play. His mother kept nudging him back to nets and cricket began eating his schooling. He missed his JSC for Under17 duty and his SSC while touring New Zealand with Under19s.
His runs came back before his land did. In 2019 he hit 3 hundreds in a row against Sri Lanka Under19( 1st player to do so in Youth ODIs). A year later he was vice-captain in South Africa when Bangladesh beat India in U19 World Cup final for their first ICC trophy. Match allowances and stipends, saved like a bride's gold, slowly bought the farmland back.
Bangladesh have spent years asking who replaces their old guard. When Seales finally removed Taskin, the answer was standing at Sylhet with bruised ribs, an unbeaten 242 and nobody left to bat with.

First time since Jan 2019 New Zealand have lost back to back ODIs at home, also against India. That was the last time New Zealand lost an ODI series at home.

Ball was short & wide outside off stump and Brendan Taylor did what he has always done. He stood tall, opened the face and uppercut it over the cordon. That was the hundred, his first in Tests in 8 years. At 40 years and 272 days, he reached it with the shot that has always been his signature.
Go back 24 years. In his 1st first class season, in 2002, a teenage Taylor made 82 and 49 in one match against a side that had the great Andy Flower in it. His captain in Sharjah, Brian Bennett, had not been born. Nobody had played a profedsional T20 match at that time. The game has reinvented itself since and Taylor is still here, in the format that asks the most.
Sharjah gave Afghanistanโs spinners a dry, slow pitch. Taylor swept Zia-ur-Rehman and reverse swept Qais Ahmad until the fielders ran out of places to stand. Most men at 40 argue with their knees. Taylor argued with a leg spinnerโs field and won. He made 131 off 168 balls, with 14 fours and 4 sixes and added 137 with Bennett. No other player has scored a Test hundred after turning 40 in last 10 years.
The road between was not straight. In 2019 on a trip to India, men gave him cocaine, filmed him and next morning handed him $15000 with a demand to spot-fix. He took the money to get home and told ICC 4 months later. A failed drug test came in 2021, then a ban of 3.5 years.
He checked into rehab in Eastern Highlands, ran, sat in cold water, meditated and lost 20 kg. He opened a coaching school for children in Harare and thought his cricket was done. In 2025, Zimbabwe Cricket asked him to come back.
so there was some poetry in how his hundred arrived. The upper cut is older than his captain. Bennett, 71* at stumps, watched it from 22 yards away and a generation behind.

Yep Big Point. The Trio cannot sustain for long - there is big reduction in their quality at the end of a series than it is at the start. Fault is theirs as they haven't allowed the bench bowlers to come in.
๐ฃ๏ธ โThis attack, for all of its greatness, has lost games for Australia at the end of big Test seriesโ
Is it time for Australia to start thinking about regenerating their Test bowling attack? ๐ฆ๐บ
