Quick notes on Heat-Timberwolves, which was a wildly impressive Minnesota win. -Miami obviously wants to get up and run which is an amazing fit for Giannis. His first half entirely dominant on offense, but man their halfcourt offense was a mess tonight. Felt like Mitchell was so sped up and struggled with making the right decisions. Way too much Nikola Jovic. Obviously they didn't shoot it well but I also don't think they created a crazy number of good 3-point looks. Lot of work to do on offense with Miami. The space for Giannis is good, and Minnesota is like, the worst possible matchup for them with Rudy on the interior. But if it wasn't Giannis in early offense, everything felt exceptionally hard. -Klay Thompson was a magnet in the first half for Minnesota to attack with its primary playmakers. Was pretty clearly the target. He struggled to deal with screens and just was stuck behind the play so often, giving Ant and Jaden particularly advantages they took advantage of. But even one on one, it felt like he wasn't quite quick enough to deal with those guys, especially as he was picking them up in transition. Minnesota is tough for this group defensively, but through one game at least it seems like they're gonna have to do a better job of hiding Klay defensively instead of challenging him to guard opposing teams' best players, which is a bit of an issue because it feels like Miami wants to stick Giannis on the non-shooter to let him roam in help. -Gonna predict that at some point we're gonna see Pelle Larsson enter the starting lineup for Klay if he shows even a modicum of willingness to do anything on offense. I thought Larsson was so good on defense tonight in making LaMelo and Ant work for their shots after they got hot early. Was great at flipping his hips and walling up. But Heat can't see possessions like the one at 2:04 in the 3rd Q where Larsson passes up an open 3, attacks the closeout and turns it over on the drive. -Nearly flawless game from Minnesota. Every single thing you could have wanted to see. Ant getting to play more consistently off of the ball and having LaMelo to help him get loose was a major help. Just absolutely buried shot after shot. Loved Ant's aggression on the defensive glass. Spectacular in Game 1. -Thought LaMelo was really good, too. Even with Miami wanting to get up and run, thought he totally dictated the tempo of the game and found Minnesota better shots in early offense than Miami's battering ram Giannis approach. Also loved all of the ball-screen to flare actions to get Ant and LaMelo loose and to get them space. -Rudy made exactly zero shots and he was still a monster on defense and played such a good game. Contested everything at the rim and cut off angles in ball-screens. Struggled in space a bit with Giannis but was phenomenal in every other aspect and controlled the glass. His gap control in help and one-on-two situations is sort of unteachable because his length is an outlier, but it's perfect on nearly every single play. -McDaniels is going to feast off of so many easy shots from LaMelo and Ant, either open 3s or attacking closeouts. Thought he was awesome on defense tonight, too. His length and disruption was everywhere. -Would say Beringer was maybe the only disappointing part for Minnesota. Thought he was overaggressive early in ball-screen coverages then struggled a bit defensively in one-on-ones with Bam. Did well crashing the O glass but would like to see more before immediately concluding that backup center is solved for MIN for this year (long-term, think Beringer will be really good).

I would like to see the Heat play other teams who don't have Rudy Gobert before coming to that conclusion given how good Giannis was tonight. xitter.cf/spurlgin/status/211311…

You don’t think this pace is a gimmick Miami Heat just can’t sustain? They might have to embrace winning ugly

I totally get why Bucks fans are saying to trade Turner just given his age and contract -- I'm not against it at the right price -- but mannnnnn. If you think they're unwatchable now, I would be really worried about what the defense would be without MT around.

Bucks need to do the following: Cut Kuzma Trade Turner to GSW Extend Herro Extend Jaquez

Overall thoughts on Wizards-Bucks, which was fun. -AD was the best player on the court and looks like he's totally back right now. Dominated on both ends. MIL had zero answer for him inside. -Kyshawn George is gonna be a winning basketball player for a long time in the NBA. His 4th quarter on both ends was sick. -Thought Ayton gave WAS big minutes, too, especially at the start of the 4th. Had a few huge defensive stops on the interior then Bucks had no answer for the Trae/Ayton ball-screen game. -Bub Carrington's game was awesome. Still needs to consistently get rim pressure but I thought his defensive intensity was way better at the point of attack even if he can still get pushed around a bit. Made some big shots to keep WAS in it in that middle stretch of the game. -Thought Trae was much, much better after the disaster start in the attached tweet. The passing was massive. Do think he's gonna have to find the shot again, but he was a positive presence. -Thought Coulibaly's presence defensively was unmistakable. His length to get deflections and cover ground was super helpful. On the other side, did not think Middleton looked like he was moving great. -Jaquez was a great energy/mismatch scorer in this game. -Hated everything about Ware on defense. Getting demolished by AD is whatever, but the moment at 10:30 in the 4th where he shows at the level on a ball-screen then just jogs back into the play afterward leaving Burries in no-man's land in a one-on-two at the rim and corner was unacceptable. -Thought Burries was quite good for a rookie in 15 minutes with his 12 points. Gonna do a video on him for tomorrow maybe over on the Substack. -Also liked the Jakucionis minutes. Thought he moved the ball well. -Herro was awesome in the first half, particularly the second quarter. Obviously not a real NBA No. 1 option but I do think he would help someone in a trade in the right role if they go that route. Was really good in ball-screens tonight even if he slowed down later.
IDK what has happened since, I'm five minutes into Wizards-Bucks. But in those five minutes Trae Young has gotten backcut by Jaime Jaquez for an and-one, given up a post-seal bucket to Jaquez, then tried to draw a foul on a 3, airballed leading to a runout dunk for Jaquez. yikes

Legit looks like LaMelo just forgot that he had to dribble and the ref standing right there just didn't even consider calling it. We gotta get a handle on traveling.

(AD looks absolutely incredible 8 minutes into this game, though, and has completely taken over. this is awesome)

Yeah I thought Ausar was obviously incredible fighting through screens last night and made life miserable for Tatum on the ball, but he was messier I thought with his scrambling and chaos help rotations than normal. Thought he gave up some chances, too.
Ausar is an all world defender but we have had chances to take advantage of his aggressiveness off ball JT got two back cuts leading to layup attempts on him and on every PnR he is tagging heavily bc of his playmaking nature - gotta get the reads on time and shake action should help

Clayton makes a ton of sense for the Dallas First Round Pick Rehabilitation Project that Masai and Schmitz seem to be undertaking since they took over given the team’s lack of future draft capital moving forward (Risacher, Sasser, Howard, now Walt)
Guard Walter Clayton Jr. has agreed on a two-way NBA deal with the Dallas Mavericks, sources tell ESPN.

lmao the Knicks won the title last year. You don't get called a media darling in the first game after you win a title and run back all but one of your key players lol

My notes from Knicks-76ers are literally just a slow descent into madness as the Knicks continued to blitz Maxey-Embiid ball-screens relentlessly at the end while giving up an obvious 4 on 3 every single possession to a team with LeBron, VJ, Jaylen and Embiid in the 4 on 3s.

My favorite set from Celtics-Pistons: Essentially a double drag with a back-screen for Ausar while being guarded by Garza that shifts into a stack/Spain that is a screen-the-screener for Duncan Robinson for a 3. Don't care that Duncan missed it, the idea here is beautiful.

Think Jaden is poised for a huge year, don’t really have a problem with adding a year. Just really hard to find two-way wings. Guys like Jaden and Anunoby who can be truly elite on defense plus legitimate offensive weapons are worth their weight in gold.
Replying to @Sam_Vecenie
U have thought on the jaden extension? Super weird. Seems like a big win for Jaden, but I don’t see how anything good can from this on the wolves end.

Knecht had that awesome early month but never figured out the defensive stuff rotationally and away from the ball. Think Tennessee did a pretty good job of minimizing those issues (even if they were still there). Also think the failed trade had an impact.
The Los Angeles Lakers are waiving 2024 No. 17 pick Dalton Knecht, sources tell ESPN.
