ALT The carnivorous plant Cephalotus follicularis captures insect prey using modified leaves into pitcher traps. Cephalotus is unique in that it is the only carnivorous plant within the entire Oxalidales order to which it belongs, and thus it is not closely related to any other carnivorous plant. The pitcher traps produce a cocktail of hydrolytic enzymes which digest insect prey. Although the enzymes are similar to other genera of carnivorous plants, the mode of their regulation differs. ALT Title: Detection and compartmentalization of reactive oxygen species in root hairs. Cover description: Root hairs elongate as tubular outgrowths of trichoblasts by polarized tip growth. Together with Ca2+ and pH, reactive oxygen species (ROS) play an important role in this process. Subcellular location of the ROS origin, compartmentalization, and utilization is funda-mental for bulge formation and the tip growth of root hairs. Because ROS represent a range of oxygen species with different chemical properties, detection of their spatiotemporal distribu-tion pattern requires selective probes and sophisticated localization methods. A high-reso-lution live-cell fluorescence imaging of ROS production and subcellular localization using such small-molecule fluorescent probes revealed that CM-H2DCFDA can detect ROS in cyto-plasm, CellROXTM Deep Red in mitochondria, and AmplexTM Red in apoplast of root hairs.
