My daughter’s school called me and said she had been bullying another student.
I couldn’t believe it.
My daughter is 13, and I had never received a complaint about her before.
When she got home, I asked her about it.
Me: “Your school called me today. They said you’ve been bullying someone.”
Daughter: “What did they tell you?”
Me: “They said you’ve been making another girl cry.”
Daughter: “Dad, I didn’t bully her.”
Me: “Then why did the school call?”
Daughter: “Because I refused to stop sitting with her.”
I didn’t understand.
Me: “What does that mean?”
Daughter: “Her name is Sophie. Nobody wants to sit with her at lunch because they say she’s weird.”
Me: “And what does that have to do with you?”
Daughter: “I started eating lunch with her. Now the girls who used to sit with me are angry.”
I told her I would speak to the school the following morning.
The next day, I met her class teacher.
Teacher: “Your daughter has created a difficult situation in the classroom.”
Me: “By sitting with another student?”
Teacher: “She has been encouraging other students to ignore their usual friendship groups.”
Me: “Isn’t that their choice?”
The teacher sighed.
Teacher: “There’s more to this. Sophie has been making accusations against some of the other girls.”

Teacher: “She claims they have been hiding her belongings and making fun of her.”

I asked her to explain.
She opened a folder, removed a printed photograph and placed it in front of me.
It showed my daughter standing outside the school with Sophie.
But what caught my attention was the date written beneath the photograph.
It was taken on a Sunday.
My daughter had told me she never met Sophie outside school.
