I'm doing more online talks over the coming months looking at the social and architectural history of the British seaside. Pretend it's still summer and join me for a dip into the seaside past ticketsource.com/kathryn-fer…
How has spending a day at the beach changed?
We still laze around - but wear far less clothing! Paddling and sandcastle building remain perennial favourites 😊
Join me for more seaside holiday history online this Friday 23 Oct ticketsource.com/kathryn-fer…

Billy Butlin was a fantastically energetic entrepreneur so I'm looking forward to sharing his fascinating life history in my upcoming online talk for @SocGenealogists
Open to non-members too...
Join @SeasideFerry 10 Sept, 2pm, to discover Sir Billy Butlin: The Holiday Maker.
From travelling showman to holiday-camp pioneer, Butlin's rags-to-riches story made him a household name. But behind the brand, his family life was far less happy.

Ohhh, it's a tricky choice but there is only 1 week to go before the vote closes so make your mind up soon...

Which of these British seaside attractions is the BEST?
Do vote from @seaside_network's shortlist for them to win: seasideheritage.org.uk/bucke… (I am biased but SURELY it has to be Volk's, Aberystwyth Cliff Railway or Wemyss Bay station...) 🌊⛵️🏖️
I LOVE the interior of the Harbour Bar! And all the old signage. Plus the ice cream's not bad!
If you've been to the #harbourbar in #scarborough you'll know why it's on this year's #bucketandspade shortlist.
Are its vintage decor and freshly made ice cream a winning combination for you?

Still time to sign up - but only just!
Are you thinking of coming to our symposium on 26th June? We hope so but there are only a few tickets left so don't delay, book today!
Join us plus partners @hbap1924 and @Heritage_Net_UK for a packed day of talks, discussions & networking at Saltdean Lido
Still time to book for my next online talk celebrating a century of gorgeous Portmeirion - ticketsource.com/kathryn-fer…
What makes Portmeirion unique? I'll be exploring that question in my online talk on 17th June. The vision of founder, Clough Williams-Ellis, was a determining factor, especially in his use of colour, architectural salvage and carefully framed 'eye traps' ticketsource.com/kathryn-fer…

📣Last call for my online talk *this evening* about the impact of the #festivalofbritain on #seaside buildings. To celebrate its 75th anniversary I'll discuss festival style as seen in #piers, pavilions and even #beachhuts
ticketsource.com/kathryn-fer…
There was a craze for roller skating around this time and lots of piers got in on the act, you could definitely skate on the piers at #blackpool and #bournemouth as well as #torquay seen here

The atmospheric haze and languid mood of a hot summer's day in 'The Wave,' (1913) shows the easy brilliance of Elioth Gruner's technique; a painting most likely made at Tamarama, Sydney in Australia. The narrow format is a nod to the influence of Whistler and Japonisme.

It's 50 years since the death of #agathachristie so we're paying homage to the queen of crime fiction in our July seminar.

With Sussex being our theme this week, here's "Brighton (The Front at Brighton)" by Elwin Hawthorne from 1933. I have also attached the preparatory sketch for the view. It is fascinating to read Elwin's annotation in the foreground. #ElwinHawthorne #Brighton #Sussex

Seaside heritage as world heritage? Vital conversation! Saltdean Lido shows exactly why these spaces matter. Looking forward to Dr Ferry's insights.
