I think it’s unacceptable that Canada’s paper of record is publishing views calling the Premiers of SK and AB “traitors” for defending their economies. Did anyone call the ON premier a traitor for not accepting tariffs on the auto sector? Or the Maritime premiers for not accepting restrictions on seafood trade in retaliatory tariffs? We are constantly told that what is good for the East is good for Canada, but what is good for the West is only good for the West.
Opinion: ‘Danielle Smith and Scott Moe want the benefit of the sacrifices other Canadians are making in this war, but refuse to put two of our most strategic weapons on the frontline.’ Letters to the editor for Sept. 1 theglobeandmail.com/opinion/…

Bill 11 isn’t U.S.-style health care. It’s a tiny step toward European-style care, which is universally public care with private options that take pressure off the public system. I know that’s threatening to healthcare unions’ monopolies but shouldn’t patients come first?

This is my daughter Vienna and her storey but, it’s a storey shared throughout the country in different iterations. The common thread extensive wait times, worsening conditions, innovation deemed “experimental” because the system cannot keep with innovation that has become a simple standard of care option in the USA. Anterior Scoliosis Correction is a motion preserving standard of care surgical technique to correct scoliosis with multiple tethers and is therefore capable of correcting mature spines with no growth left (ie. child and adult spines). Think of it as the iPhone 17. Canada offers Growth Modulation tethering surgery using 1 tether on children’s spines requiring growth left in the spine to pull the tether tight as the spine grows (think of this as the original iPhone). Vienna was told to use a brace to try to avoid surgery bracing failed and her delayed referral meant she was not a candidate for Canada’s single tether correction and was put on the fusion wait list. Fusion meant she would lose her spinal mobility in a procedure that works but, creates a rigidi immoveable spine where fused. This would be 80% of her thoracic spine. (Fusion is like a rotary dial phone.) She remained waiting for fusion for over two years as her spine went from 54 degrees to 67 degrees. We have always done what we were told. We’ve paid our taxes, been proud of universal healthcare for all, did the bracing recommended and waited. But, at 67 degrees, an unstable curve heading towards 70 plus degrees, increasing pain and threat of complications to her internal organs we couldn’t wait any longer and applied for Out-of-Country Health Services (the pressure valve system in place to capture cases like Vienna’s). But, it failed us too. What are Canadians supposed to do when the system we own and pay for is blocking us from accessing the care we need? @CDNConstFound @SecondStreetOrg
An Alberta family is taking the province to court after paying nearly $200,000 out of pocket for spinal surgery in the United States, arguing years-long healthcare delays violated their daughter’s constitutional rights. Vienna Pedatella was diagnosed with idiopathic scoliosis at age 13 and waited more than two years for surgery in Alberta, well beyond the recommended six-month timeline for pediatric spinal surgery, as her spinal curvature continued to worsen despite following her doctors’ recommended bracing and physical therapy. The family applied to Alberta’s Out-of-Country Health Services Program, designed to fund care unavailable in Canada due to excessive wait times, after finding a surgeon in New Jersey who could operate within weeks. When their application and subsequent appeal were both rejected, with a review committee determining Vienna could have continued waiting in Alberta, the family paid for the surgery themselves in August 2025. With support from the Canadian Constitution Foundation, the family has now filed a judicial review asking the court to overturn the decision and force the government to reimburse the surgery costs. Ontario has overtaken Québec as Canada's biggest corporate welfare spender. That's not progress. Instead of handing out $11.5B a year to politically selected firms, Ontario could cut its corporate tax rate to just 4.75%—creating a level playing field where every business can compete, invest, and grow. The government should stop picking winners and losers. #ONpoli #cdnpoli iedm.org/ontario-government-…

Canada spends well above the OECD average and performs worse on many key metrics so no, simply spending more is not the answer. But this sort of thinking explains why we’ve become complacent with a system that is failing millions, especially the most vulnerable
Or they could ~experiment~ with actually properly funding the existing model and creating incentives for more Canadians to go into healthcare!!! You are literally playing into the “break it so they can privatize it” agenda, which is unsurprising but still very gross!

My family member had to pay $7k out of pocket for varicose vein surgery when experiencing serious issues. A lifetime of paying into a system that wasn't available when it was desperately needed for a serious health matter. Canadian healthcare is certainly not free.

You pay too much tax because they waste too much money. City of Toronto spends $2,000 on a plaque for a racoon that died 10 years ago. Premier Eby wastes $354,000 on three fake soccer balls. Government-run grocery stores won't bring back food affordability; bureaucrats don't have the know-how to run complex supply chains. Instead of creating flashy new stores they can't run, politicians should focus on removing the policies that make food more expensive. #cdnpoli
Municipal grocery stores are bad idea. With margins of just 3%–5%, even eliminating them would only save a few dollars a month. The real issue is the public policies driving food prices higher. #cdnpoli #grocery iedm.org/city-run-grocery-st…
