Despite the huge spatial & temporal overlap of N Atl #mako sharks with #fishing, & the 'overfishing/overfished' stock assessment, #ICCAT2019 members reject total retention ban - any real interest in shark fisheries management or sustainable fishing?

... whereas, for example, in the puma sequence in #sevenworldsoneplanet, the predator not only gets a cute name (Sarmiento) but also a heartrending back story of her struggle to feed her cubs in the face of insurmountable adversity. #predatortypecasting
... although it is fascinating to see that #BBC #sevenworldsoneplanet falls into the usual clichés with sharks (eery music/the "ruthless predator" that is "well able to pick off reef fish"; actually they have relatively low hunting success rates of 5-8% bit.ly/35npD3S)
No, @Daily_express those aren't great white sharks in Australia #sevenworldsoneplanet "filling their stomachs’ in brutal once in decade coastal onslaught"... they're actually whaler sharks. Ridiculously out of touch and inaccurate reporting @ipsonews

In the same week that great #hammerhead #sharks have been shown to be apex predators crucial to ecosystem function, don't forget you can still pick up some dried, very, very juvenile scalloped hammerheads, four for the price of $1.50, in your local market in #Madagascar...

Iceland demonstrating best-practice 1st world fisheries management: ensure your fisheries minister is ex-director of major fish company, bribe Namibian officials for access, oh and make sure a fifth of MPs own "stocks in stocks", i.e. fishing companies. bit.ly/2OiiY49
For those of you who have always fantasized about knowing that Kiss is playing "Love Gun" 10 metres above you while you dive with a carcharhinid
If this works to attract sharks, which band should we bring on our next expedition? @genesimmons

Finned sharks may "survive" (miraculously!) but... presumably they're having difficulty staying upright, making sudden turns, displaying dominance and mating, given that the dorsal fin plays a role in all of these things...

Many bacteria declined but one increased by 333% - “Gordonia,” which - guess what - EATS PLASTIC. This would be good news for any fish calling the South Pacific Tropical Gyre home, if it wasn’t for the fact that #plastic isn’t kale @No_PlasticWaste #oceans #plasticpollution
Tiny, jagged-edged microplastics can cause trauma in the stomachs of fish and introduce deadly bacteria.

Plastic waste is a global crisis that requires our attention TODAY.

And the last bit of good news is that #zebrafish may be fish but they actually share 70% of genes with humans - so the authors conclude that these findings may be applicable in humans.
Replying to @Shantabarley @No_PlasticWaste
So in addition to having to deal with their guts having +mucus, +inflammation, +cell death and +permeability (which allows toxins to leach straight into bloodstream), fishes are also being “helped” by these bacteria to eek every last drop of goodness out of their plastic meals.

@ed_hawkins - creator of #WarmingStripes - has also produced these images of changes in average temperatures for each #ocean basin from 1901-2018. What jumps out at you from these?
So many perks
The pearlfish has a special relationship with sea cucumbers. The pearlfish will live in the sea cucumber's anus, backing into the hole tail-first so its head can stick out, avoiding predators and having easier access to food 🤨 By @nowsciencenews
Wow - despite the "Thames effect", humpbacks are doing the opposite of what many shark populations have done (>90% declines since 1950!)
Good news to start your weekend: the western South Atlantic Humpback whale population is recovering, up a staggering 90% since the 1950. bit.ly/2OUxpgN @Bertarelli_fdn
