This is one of those "horseshoe" points of convergence on the left & right (and such credits are very common among peer nations!). As it happens, Capita just point out some more data & model legislation today that shows how a version of parental Social Security credits could work: capita.org/social-security-c…
It's honestly kind of crazy that we credit parents $0 of Social Security benefits for raising kids, even though raising kids is the only thing keeping Social Security solvent!

The Ohio plan for the New Deal’s unemployment insurance program - with its pooled funds, split employer/employee contributions, more generous maximum benefit, and no experience rating mandate - was so much better than the alternative Wisconsin plan.

Good. There’s no way for Vance or anyone else to lead a pro-family party without clearly *rooting* for single people (many of whom hope for children!) rather than treating them as culture war punching bags.
In Vance's new book — which will be released tomorrow — the VP writes that his infamous "childless cat ladies" comment was "a clear moment where I failed."

“The early Christians lived in a world, not of nuclear families, but “households.” These complex assemblies of an extended family, slaves, freedmen, business associates, and tenants were the basic building block of Greco-Roman society.”
"It is at this point – the beginning of marriage and family – that most North Americans begin the long retreat into the nuclear isolation so celebrated by proponents of 'family values.'"

Remarkable-Chicago launches an LPE minor for undergrads. It’s interesting to think about LPE as agenda somewhat similar to civic thought on the right, building parallel expertise that could displace irreformable institutions. collegecatalog.uchicago.edu/…

If these billionaires support UBI, what are they doing about the work requirements for SNAP and Medicaid in One Big Beautiful Bill?
Hard to believe we’re gonna do a UBI when we’re doing work reqs to get health care and help buying groceries.
Red-state paid leave legislation with bipartisan authors (lead R represents Cincinnati suburbs), looks inclusive (not limited to parental leave), and same 14 weeks for all eligible workers. Will be interesting to see if it moves.
This looks like a very promising bipartisan bill for a contributory paid leave program in Ohio. 👀 record-courier.com/story/new…

Won’t be taking advice about the soul of America from the guy that killed the Child Tax Credit then went back to his yacht

@Sen_JoeManchin: "If you lose a @SenatorCollins in the United States Senate, you've lost the soul of America, what it's all about, and I mean that with my heart. I believe that."

Goldman Sachs estimates that the combination of higher gas prices and a reduction in federal benefits will reduce real income for the bottom 20% of income earners to near zero in 2026 (net of OBBBA tax cuts).
As a dog-less dad living next to Althea Tanner Park in DC, what I love about the dog park is that it made the the people park much safer, especially for young children. (Pre-dog-park, my kid got bit by an unleashed dog).
I cannot wait for @mattyglesias’ latest to become center-left conventional wisdom, I’ve been waiting for this shift for years

Most notable thing about these two point-counterpoint pieces on whether to universalize the CTC is how narrowly they continue to frame the debate.

Class discrimination via accent is really important. Check out the thread on this excellent paper in Colombia - I would love to see similar for UK and US.
Importantly, this paper shows accents matter separately from the signal they give of income & education.
New Working Paper Alert 📔
Do accents shape social and economic opportunity? With @miweintraub83 and @NGarbirasDiaz, we tested this in Colombia through an online experiment with 6,000 adults.

A more apt description for this grouping might be "men's rights centrism." Their centrism distinguishes their advocacy for men from misogynist variants on the right as well as ones informed by masculinities studies and feminism on the left.

Maybe, but need to keep in mind @pewresearch's recent finding that In reality, both "young men and young women have become less religious in recent decades. The decline has been particularly steep among women, resulting in a smaller gender gap." pewresearch.org/religion/202…
“Gallup’s latest data, from 2024-2025, show 42% of young men saying religion is very important to them, up sharply from 28% in 2022-2023. By contrast, during this period, young women’s attachment to religion has held steady at about 30%.”
