Nothing more ignorant about Africa than these 'Africa' pages.
Lagos had a railway in 1901. More than a century later, its leaders still move millions of people in old minibuses.
Nigerians took over the railway in 1960, when Lagos had 655,000 people. In 1964 it had its best financial year since independence. Then neglect and mismanagement ran it down.
Today Lagos has at least 13 million people. Its first urban rail line opened in 2023: 13 km, carrying about 15,000 passengers a day against a target of 150,000. The rest ride danfo minibuses. In 2017 the state counted over 55,000 of them and called them largely old and rickety.
The average commuter loses 2.21 hours a day in traffic. The city loses about ₦4 trillion a year.
Lagos did not fail because it grew. It failed because the people who inherited it did not build for growth in time

Behold the Warrior! With the Ite Igbo resting upon his head He carries more than tradition; He carries the memory of the dead. Drums may sound, warriors may dance, But beneath the spectacle Lives a history that commands reverence. This is Ohafia. Where the past never truly passes

I slept in the same room with two big python unknowingly.
During my NYSC days, I served in Ogidi, Idemili. If you know Ogidi very well, especially around Iyi-Enu Hospital, you'll understand the tradition. They don't kill pythons in that community. If you mistakenly kill one, you're expected to give it a proper burial, just like a human being.
My landlady had already briefed me about their culture, so I was always careful. But I never imagined I'd experience it firsthand.
One particular day, I washed my clothes, spread them on the fence and went to church. I returned at night and went straight to pack my clothes. Without checking them properly, I gathered everything and dumped them on my bed.
Unknown to me, TWO BIG PYTHONS were hiding among the clothes!
I slept on the other side of the bed. Each time I rolled over and moved closer to the clothes, I felt something cold against my body. I assumed it was just some damp clothes that needed more sunlight.
The funny thing? I slept comfortably all through the night!
It wasn't until the following morning, when I started sorting out my clothes, that I discovered what I had been sharing my bed with.
TWO HUGE PYTHONS!
I screamed so loudly that I eventually fainted. My landlord had to come and remove them.
Imagine sleeping peacefully beside two pythons all night and waking up to discover your roommates! 😭
Till today, I still wonder what would have happened if I had rolled over to the other side of that bed.
My second encounter was in my kitchen 😱

This is why being yourself matters.
Look at what Senegal has shown the world tonight. The music, the dancing, the traditional clothing, the storytelling, the creativity. Everything speaks to who we are as Africans.
These may be the Youth Olympic Games, rather than the Summer Olympics or the World Cup, but the beauty of this ceremony is extraordinary.
Senegal didn’t need to abandon its identity to impress the world. It celebrated that identity.
Sometimes we Africans forget how much beauty, talent and creativity we already have.
Congratulations, Senegal. You have made history, and you have made Africa proud. 🇸🇳🌍
