Many people do not realize brick and mortar is a living unit. The brick is permanent the mortar is meant to be temporary, it is meant to act as the lungs of the body. The expansion and contraction happens there so that it doesn't happen in the body of the brick. Breathing in and out as the temperature/weather changes. Which is why if you use the wrong kind of mortar to make repairs you're in big trouble and your bricks are going to eventually fail because they are doing the work the mortar was meant to do. Your first job if you have a brick building is to understand the age of bricks, what kind of mortar they used. It will vary by era, by regional material availability and sometimes they even got it wrong! Bad repairs made with modern mixes on old brick are another common issue. There's lots of good resources out there today if you're a homeowner or property owner to better understand how to care for your brick building. The lesson is be good to your mortar so that it can be good to your brick, don't cover it in things it wasn't meant to be covered in. There is special paint out there, if you must go that way, that is formulated to breathe.
