The mayor made two separate attempts to derail this deal. She worked hard to increase the odds that Spurs ownership would possibly start weighing other cities as options. (Some will say “that was never really on the table anyway” .. Never say never. You don’t take a great thing or great opportunity for granted. Make whatever excuses for her you want. The fact remains: she worked against one of the best deals a small-market city has ever landed for a pro sports team and arena. That shouldn’t be forgotten going forward. Twice. She tried twice. Thank you council members Kaur, Viagran, Gavito, White, Spears, and Gonzalez. Now let’s all get on the same train and work through the other aspects to get this project going.
God Bless THE SACRED SIX! A huge San Antonio thank you to Councilmembers Sukh Kaur, Phyllis Viagran, Marina Aldrete Gavito, Ivalis Meza Gonzalez, Misty Spears and Marc Whyte, the six members of City Council who stood their ground against Mayor OJ’s misinformation, pressure campaign and attempted derailment of the new Spurs arena project. When the full-court press came, they didn’t flop. They didn’t dribble the ball off their feet. And they didn’t let Mayor OJ run out the clock. They voted 6–5 to keep the project (and San Antonio) moving forward. History shall remember them as The Sacred Six: defenders of democracy, protectors of the Spurs and guardians of San Antonio’s basketball future. Okay, the “sacred” part may be slightly tongue-in-cheek. But my gratitude is completely sincere. Thank you for listening to the voters, standing firm under pressure and refusing to let political sour grapes become public policy. The Sacred Six have spoken. Go Spurs Go! #Spurs #SanAntonio #SpursArena #SacredSix #FoolishFive #MayorOJ

The Mayor was forced to admit that the $489M in funding CAN’T GO to the budget deficit, but that hasn’t stopped her from saying it at her town hall meetings. We voted. Now it’s time to get this $2B investment in our community done. credit to @JordanElderTV for the video

Shocking. Willing to bet he dreaded PE growing up and was always out first in dodgeball. Voters already approved this. Props A and B passed at the ballot box. This isn’t some backroom deal he’s uncovering, it’s the will of the people he claims to represent. The $489m comes from hotel and rental car taxes. Visitors pay it, not residents. Most of the rest is state hotel tax revenue that already goes back to Austin if we don’t use it. Dallas and Fort Worth already use the same tool for their own venues. San Antonio finally deciding to compete instead of watching that money leave is not “horrific” it’s beyond overdue. The Spurs already offered revenue sharing, $75M over 30 years with no strings attached. And that’s on top of the countless hours they’ve poured ( and continue to pour) into this community and our kids ( they’ve been doing it since 1989) , giving kids encouragement and giving kids hope — placing wind under their sails to strive to do good things. I know because I was one of those kids over 30+ years ago. No economic study will ever quantify that. And no councilman’s opinion on a video live from his bed in a wife beater will change what this city already voted for.
Dist. 2's McKee-Rodriguez is voting "yes" for re-vote on the $489M for the Spurs downtown arena. Says deal is "horrific", is new info, growing city deficit, says sports venues routinely fail, wants revenue sharing, says SAS will want more & more #nba #porvida #sanantonio 👇🏻

She is recycling the same misleading framing she used before the first vote. Acting like this $489M can just be redirected to close the budget gap when it legally CANT. Nothing’s changed. She lost that fight once to the Spurs and San Antonio and she clearly isn’t ready to accept it. Shes miserable.
Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones says San Antonio voters—not City Hall—should decide on the City's $489M Spurs arena investment, citing a $158M budget deficit and possible property tax hikes. Why another vote after two have Props have already passed? Because things have changed.

Today in 1984, the best second baseman in baseball took the best closer in baseball deep in consecutive innings on national television. I hope Ryno and Bruce Sutter are hanging out today in heaven having more fun than any of us sharing stories.

If you were born in the 90s or 00s, you may not know about guys like Iceman or the A-Train. That’s cool and expected. 🙌 What’s not cool is professing ignorance, dismissing them or being disrespectful.😖 Young people should know their history and old people need to teach it.
