The interviewer asked one simple question: "How did you get through that period?"
Elon Musk didn't answer.
He went quiet. His eyes filled up. After a long pause he said quietly: "Can we just break for a second?"
This was 2015, years after the crisis, and he still couldn't talk about 2008 without stopping.
Here's what that year looked like. At 37, he had put everything into two companies most people expected to fail, an electric car maker and a rocket company. Then the 2008–09 recession hit. The money he'd invested was gone, and they still needed more. He put in everything he had left. He was borrowing money from friends to pay the rent. He didn't even own a house.
He was days away from losing everything he had built.
He could have walked away and lived comfortably for the rest of his life. Asked why he didn't, he admitted he had sometimes wondered whether it was the right choice. But he said there are certain things we must do for the future to be good.
In the last week of 2008, SpaceX launched a rocket that didn't explode for the first time. A NASA contract followed, and the company survived.
What followed: supply missions to the Space Station, the Model X, and a plan for a city on Mars.
"I'm not saying we will do it. I'm just saying we're going to try."
People see the rockets and the headlines. They don't see the man who had to stop an interview because the memory still hurt.
That's the price of building the future. He paid it.
@elonmusk
Scariest Halloween story ever: three rocket launches fail and you’ve got money for one more try. 🎃
Elon took the fourth shot, and now he catches rockets with chopsticks.
Happy Halloween @elonmusk

President Trump breaks out his signature dance moves on stage following his Mississippi rally, closing out the night as the countdown to the midterm elections continues.
The president wraps up his appearance after campaigning for Republican Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith, with Election Day just eight days away.
What’s it like to work with Elon Musk?
In this rare 2018 CNBC interview, SpaceX President & COO Gwynne Shotwell put it simply:
“I love working for Elon. He’s a great boss. He’s funny. He’s incredibly fair, almost to a fault. He works really hard. He’s an inspirational leader… and I want to work hard to make sure I do whatever I can to help him.”
She also noted how SpaceX learns from Tesla’s manufacturing scale (while producing far fewer units itself) and the value of cross-pollination across Musk’s companies.
Steady leadership + relentless execution. Still relevant years later.
@Gwynne_Shotwell @elonmusk
Years ago Elon said rockets being thrown away was insane, and that without reusability we'd have "a small island of discarded stages." 🏝️🚀
Today Falcon boosters land like it's routine. He didn't just predict the future, he built it.
