Do you have an AI-related idea for an start-up? Do you think if existing frontier lab's LLMs become 2x better, your product will be useless? Don't! P.S: I am not an entrepreneur; I cannot predict the future. Take my advice with a grain of salt.

I know this isn't the issue of the OP, but if they don't know, I cannot get the conversation to the point where they share things with me.

Most (?) technicians don't know much about the techniques behind their tools! This was a great source of disappointment when I was a kid and I asked the electrician how the CRT in a TV worked, or why the plane flew (from a pilot), or how a nuclear reactor worked (from an uncle).
I got my teeth 3d scanned at the dentist, I asked the lady if she could send me the 3D file. She looked at me like I had kicked a puppy and said “I’ve never heard of anyone asking for that…” like lady, it’s MY mouth. I want to 3d print my mouth as a gift to my friends. Not weird

I haven't read it yet! I hope the "skepticism" in the title doesn't turn out to be "just because biological naturalism!". 🙄
My recent book AI and Consciousness: A Skeptical Overview is free online today and tomorrow (through Oct 19, presumably UK time). I don't think the hard copy is available yet. Get it while it's free! cambridge.org/core/elements/…

Interested in RL, alignment between pre- and post-training, safe and verifiable agents, and learnability of data? Go work with Dylan!
A super exciting announcement: In January 2027, I'll be joining @UCBerkeley as an assistant professor in EECS and Statistics. I'll be recruiting PhD students and postdocs this cycle, starting Fall 2027. If you're interested the science of RL and deep learning, please apply.

Learn shamelessness from academic institutions (*)! (*): Not all ... !
Princeton didn’t consider Anne Carson worthy of a recommendation for tenure, and she couldn’t continue teaching at McGill after its Department of Classics was shut down. Now, everyone wants to claim her as their own …

Canadian 🇨🇦 content for you all!
BREAKING NEWS The 2026 #NobelPrize in Literature is awarded to the Canadian author Anne Carson, “for her bold and inventive oeuvre that, in playful dialogue with the classical tradition, has created new forms for contemporary literature.”

We are in this brief moment in history that 700+ new mathematical results are added to the our collective understanding of mathematics, but since no human has read them yet, no individual human's understanding has actually changed.
We’re releasing a broad range of new mathematical results produced by an internal frontier model. We’ve been consulting with the independent Advisory Group on Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence at the Institute for Advanced Study, and we have drawn on their advice and public recommendations to inform how we release these results. github.com/openai/math

P.S.1: This reminds me of the Chinese room argument, though only indirectly. P.S.2: I imagine a few people at OpenAI have looked at the results. Also maybe some other people have looked at some papers since ~1h ago. These are o(eps) terms in the whole humanity's scale.

🎉 Thrilled to share that 8 papers from our lab (and collaborations with lab members) have been accepted at #NeurIPS2026! The work spans RL, world models, dynamical systems, LLM safety & interpretability, tabular foundation models, and forecasting. Huge congrats to everyone 🧵👇

Some back of envelope calculations: I guess many of these are NeurIPS resubmissions. NeurIPS received about 35K. Maybe 10-30% didn't resubmit. About 28K from NeurIPS. So 55 - 28 = 27K new papers in about 5 months: 5K/month. How many active AI/ML researchers do we have BTW?
ICLR 2027 has received more submissions than all previous years (2013–2026) combined

I will just drop this here: stat.yale.edu/~pollard/Books… (Probability Tools, Tricks and Miracles). Unconditional fan of Pollard's writings! Wow, just wow! (Even if I don't believe in miracles.)
