I used to break up my children's fights and demand a quick "sorry." They'd mumble it, roll their eyes, and walk away, and I'd feel like I had restored peace. But an hour later the same fight would be back, because nothing had really changed. The words were said, but no one had understood anything. I was teaching them to end an argument, not to mend a relationship. Now I do it differently. I sit them down, separate them if I have to, and ask each one, "What do you think your sister felt when you did that?" At first they just stare at me. Then slowly, they start to answer. "She felt sad because I took her thing" "He felt embarrassed because I laughed." Some days it takes twenty minutes, and I'll admit, those are the days I'd rather just say "sorry" and move on. But those twenty minutes are where something real happens, because a child who can name another person's feelings is learning empathy. It takes longer, but it's teaching them how to understand people, not just how to end an argument. And I'm beginning to see that these small living-room lessons will follow them into their friendships, their workplaces, and one day their own marriages. The child who learns to say "I see how I hurt you" at seven becomes the adult who can say it at thirty. That's what I'm raising them for: to love people well, not just to behave.
