Rachael Field has been denied PIP despite having tongue cancer and being given around 3 years left to live. This is the 4th time she’s faced cancer within 6 years. She cannot eat, talk, dress herself or use the bathroom independently. This is diabolical! bbc.co.uk/news/articles/ckqx…

As I’ve been saying for a long time, by far the worst thing that Israel has done, even worse than genocide, has been to train AI not to value human life, which has implications for the whole of humanity.
Research engineer Sofia Liguori resigned from Google's DeepMind this month over the company's AI technology being increasingly integrated into military and surveillance systems, particularly as part of Israel's war in Gaza. While there has been a wave of high-profile resignations from tech companies over fears that AI might someday turn against humanity, Liguori says the "superintelligent god killing us all" narrative serves to distract from more immediate harms posed by the technology.

An endless succession of MPs on the news, from all the main parties and Reform, saying the welfare bill must be brought down and "people on sick benefits must be got into work." They are NEVER challenged on the fact there are already 1.7m people chasing under 700k vacancies.

A small minority of States has lately mounted aggressive personal attacks on multiple UN experts presenting reports in New York. I urge States to engage on the substance of reports and refrain from unprofessional smears, bullying and harassment, which only discredits governments

A helpless little baby on the day she was rescued from traffickers. You can read her story in this thread, but first I want to say this: Upwards of 80% of trafficked baby gorillas don’t survive, according to primatologist Lindsay Maess. The mother and other family members are usually killed to get the baby. The exotic pet trade is exploding—fueled by social media—and owners of these platforms can effectively censor and suppress posts they don't like—but allow this evil trade to flourish. What happened to Bili is an eye-opening story of how hard it is to help these babies, even though she is one of the more fortunate few. (1/2🧵)

When the Oxford children's dictionary discarded dozens of nature-words—"dandelion," "fern," "starling"—as irrelevant to children's imagination and replaced them with words like "broadband" and "cut-and-paste," this inspired act of resistance was born: themarginalian.org/2019/06/1…

Today Israeli authorities barred me and other European elected representatives from entering the West Bank to meet Palestinian students and civil society leaders, as part of a @ProgIntl delegation. We knew that by crossing into the occupied Palestinian territories, we risked being detained, interrogated and turned away by Israeli authorities. And that, alas, is exactly what happened. For more than eight hours, we were held, interrogated and made to feel as though we had done something wrong simply by attempting to enter. The simple truth is we had done nothing wrong. We went to show our support for the Palestinian people and highlight the terrible injustice and violence being perpetrated against them. We want to ensure that people back home do not look away from the reality of what is happening. Ultimately, we went to show solidarity. But we left with an even greater determination to speak out. We will not be silenced, and we will not look away. None of us should.

“I was released today after about four and a half months of detention.” Dr. Mazen al-Rantisi, a 71-year-old physician from Ramallah known across the West Bank as “the doctor of the poor,” speaks with a fresh wound on his face, inflicted half an hour before his release on October 25, 2026. He says a jailer dragged him to the release room handcuffed behind his back, shackled at the legs and blindfolded, then shoved and kicked him to the ground. Israeli occupation forces seized al-Rantisi from his home in the al-Tireh neighbourhood of Ramallah in June without announcing any reason, and his daughter says he lost around 25 kilograms in their prisons. He describes Nafha prison as overrun with scabies, affecting nearly 80 percent of the Palestinian hostages held there, with almost no medicine given. When prisoners beg the passing nurse for treatment, he says, they are cursed at, mocked and ridiculed, and he was taunted for taking the chronic medication a court had ordered he receive. He calls on international human rights organisations to intervene, saying Palestinian hostages are beaten and punished at the whim of their jailers with no oversight or accountability. @Aljazeeraquds

"Witnessing such a young elephant lose its life to trophy hunting is a painful reminder of why we cannot allow this to continue.Together, let's demand stricter regulations and an immediate ban on trophy hunting. Our wildlife deserves better. #BanTrophyHuntingNow"

This is what happens when someone unblocks a road drain. The flood water disappears. It’s a shame that so many local councils can’t be arsed to do this. UK councils have received over 1 million reports of blocked drains since 2013

‘Pure arrogance’: anger in Finland as Google illegally fells 250,000 trees for datacentre @guardian “Behind a wire fence lies a vast gaping wound of earth. Before Google’s arrival a few months ago, an estimated quarter of a million trees occupied the 330 hectares (815 acres) of forest near the town of Muhos in rural northern Finland. Now they are all gone” Yet again our Natural world pays the price for humankind’s commercial drive, this time to continue expansion of the booming artificial intelligence & data industry Will we ever stop plundering our beautiful planets natural resources? theguardian.com/environment/…

.@Neal_Compass: "I couldn't live on the meagre benefits people are getting. To suggest that we have to cut those.. actually that's where the engine of growth is, that's the people who spend.. how do you get people out spending.. not by cutting benefits of people at the bottom"

Let us continue to pray together for peace. The day after tomorrow, on 27 October, let us join in spirit with the heads of churches and religious leaders who will gather in Assisi to mark the 40th anniversary of the meeting convened by Saint John Paul II. Never before has it been so clear that wars, as well as sowing death and destruction, impoverish and harm the world. May the Lord inspire choices of dialogue and peace! #PrayTogether

Go for a walk on almost any farm in Britain and ask yourself where a hedgehog might find food, water or shelter there. The rough edges, pockets of scrub, areas of unkempt long grass, piles of dead wood, marshy wet areas and ponds, all tidied away. There’s nowhere left for them.
Britain had about 30 million hedgehogs in the 1950s; we've got under 875,000 today. The population has dropped by about 97%. Shocking.

Huge victory for wildlife in Lebanon! 🚨 Our teams have dismantled over 63,000 m² of illegal bird nets this autumn, saving an estimated 60,000 migratory birds as a result. 200+ birds rescued + 165 mist-nets dismantled on our latest mission alone! Huge thanks to @LebISF 🫡 🕊️
