you can spot the adult who grew up reading a room before they could read. they hear a car door outside and already know what kind of evening it's going to be. they apologize to furniture. they say "no worries" about things that are very much worries people mistake them for easygoing. they're not easygoing. they're running a weather station nobody asked them to build, checking the pressure in every voice, adjusting before the storm has made up its mind the rest of the world calls it emotional intelligence and hands them the job of keeping everyone calm at work, in friendships, in every relationship they enter. they're good at it. they were trained for it at an age when they should have been trained for nothing what they never learned is what they themselves want for dinner. ask them and there's a small pause where they check your face first the ones who grew up with steady adults around them think this is a personality. it's a skill picked up in a house where being wrong about someone's mood had a price, and nobody gets paid for it later
