Starbeamers: Weekly Wednesday #artchallenge! This week is based on the #Theme: " Silver and Amber Scratch board Art "
Post your art/relevant #StarbeamOne storefronts below 👇
Some images seem to hold their own light, as though something precious has been uncovered beneath the darkness. Silver and amber scratchboard art captures that magic through the striking contrast of cool metallic brilliance and deep, golden warmth. Imagine silver glinting like frost beneath a winter moon, amber glowing like a candle in an ancient window. Intricate details emerging from a darkness rich enough to make every highlight shine. There is something wonderfully dramatic about this approach, where a few delicate lines can reveal the shimmer of feathers, the texture of weathered stone or the intricate patterns of a moth's wings. The effect recalls the elegance of antique engravings, yet carries a luminous character all its own.
This theme invites artists to explore the expressive possibilities of silver and amber scratchboard, creating images that seem to emerge from darkness one fine detail at a time. Portraits, wildlife, architecture and fantastical subjects all offer wonderful opportunities to play with this distinctive pairing. Your composition might feel like a treasured antique, a fragment of gothic fantasy or something altogether more mysterious. Above all, embrace the drama of what is revealed and what remains hidden. The beauty of scratchboard lies in that moment when the darkness gives way, and an entire world seems to appear beneath the point of a blade.

Current Story: v2 Deployment Preparation
Notes: Ah, a day of unexpected chaos, but perhaps I should have expected it. I have been wrestling with last-minute performance issues before deployment, and this one cascaded into the entire day. 😭 I was able to determine the root cause toward the end of the day and should have it wrapped up this morning.
During this time, I also managed to make another environmental deployment to Preview.
I made several significant code changes when I should have had a code freeze. Oops. 😅 I am also feeling rather nervous about the deployment at the moment. More so than usual.
The goal now is to lock down the code and get another solid day of testing under the belt to regain confidence with all the changes put in this week.
As this is the culmination of 2.5+ years of effort, adding another day to build confidence in the deployment's quality feels like a valuable step.
If all goes well, I will flip the switch tomorrow. 🤞

Notes: Yesterday, we continued last-minute fixes and additions, mostly performance and user experience improvements. I really should have a code freeze while testing continues, but what can I say? I like to live dangerously. 🤣
I have a few more outstanding issues to hopefully knock out today, but for all intents and purposes tomorrow will be the big switch, and I am starting to prepare myself accordingly.

This week Technique Tuesday explores an Indigenous art style that passes knowledge down to the new generations.
Our base prompt looks like this:
A Woodland School style image, thick unbroken black formlines, flat vivid acrylic colour in separate cells, no shading or gradients, no Western perspective, flat picture plane, (subject) (modifiers, setting, season), x-ray cutaway view of (interior element), internal lines revealing the heart, organs, and inner life within (subject)
Use it with care: borrow the principles (formline, x-ray, connection) and use subjects from your own life. The legends and sacred beings in these artists' works belong to their own communities; they aren't ours to reproduce.
Woodland School art begins with a world in which the visible and invisible are never entirely separate. A bear may carry the strength of a spirit, a bird may connect different realms of existence, and the lines within an animal's body may reveal the relationships between its organs, its spirit, and the world around it. Colours glow against dark outlines, curved forms flow into one another, and the natural world becomes something more than a landscape to be observed: it becomes a place of stories, teachings, memory, and spiritual connection. Beneath its striking patterns lies a deeper purpose: ways of understanding the world that have endured across generations.
The movement emerged in the early 1960s among Indigenous artists in the Great Lakes region, particularly Anishinaabe communities in northern Ontario. Its founding figure was Norval Morrisseau (1932–2007), an Anishinaabe artist from Bingwi Neyaashi Anishinaabek, also known as Sand Point First Nation. Taught Ojibwe history and culture by his grandfather, Moses "Potan" Nanakonagos, Morrisseau revitalized imagery traditionally incised on rocks and in the Midewiwin birchbark scrolls, and brought Indigenous cosmology into public view at a time when mainstream institutions misunderstood or marginalized it.
His work refused to treat Indigenous art as a relic of the past. In 1962, his first solo exhibition at the Pollock Gallery in Toronto (the first solo exhibition by an Indigenous artist in a contemporary Canadian gallery) sold out on its first day. It was not uncontroversial: his paintings were initially criticized within the Indigenous community for disclosing spiritual knowledge that had not previously been shared in this way. He signed his works "Copper Thunderbird," his spirit name, in Cree syllabics, a practice other Anishnaabe School artists adopted as well.
The visual language is distinctive: bold, dark outlines, with vibrant fields of flat colour filling figures and the spaces around them. Animals, people, birds, fish, and spiritual beings appear in profile, frontal views, or combinations of both. Within the figures, internal lines segment the body and reveal what lies inside: the heart, the organs, the joints, the skeleton. These internal lines are where the style's connecting lines, or lines of power, do much of their work: drawn within a being rather than between beings, they connect it to its own inner life and suggest spiritual energy moving through it. No realistic anatomy, conventional perspective, or naturalistic backgrounds. The emphasis is on relationships, symbolism, and forces that cannot always be seen. The result is not decorative pattern-making; it is a visual grammar shaped by particular cultural traditions.
Morrisseau was the pioneer, but not the whole story. Daphne Odjig, an Odawa-Potawatomi artist from Wiikwemkoong on Manitoulin Island, placed particular emphasis on womanhood, family, and kinship, drawing on modernist influences including Cubism. Carl Ray, a Cree artist from Sandy Lake who apprenticed under Morrisseau, painted powerful, intricate legend imagery, often in a restricted palette of just a few colours. Blake Debassige of M'Chigeeng First Nation developed the visual vocabulary further, and Cree brothers Joshim and Goyce Kakegamic of Sandy Lake (painting from their teens under Morrisseau, their brother-in-law, and Ray) co-founded the Triple K Co-operative print studio in 1973. That same year, Odjig, Morrisseau, Ray, Jackson Beardy, Eddy Cobiness, Alex Janvier, and Joseph Sanchez also formalized their association as the Professional Native Indian Artists Inc., better known as the Indian Group of Seven.
Shared approaches, then, but never a uniform style: each artist's imagery reflects individual experience, community, and interpretation, and the traditions informing their work are not interchangeable.
Woodland School art matters because it brought Indigenous stories and visual knowledge into galleries and public conversation on the artists' own terms, and its influence continues in painting, illustration, printmaking, and sculpture today. Look beyond the unmistakable outlines and brilliant colours: its animals are not merely subjects, its patterns are not simply ornament, and its spiritual imagery is not a collection of symbols detached from meaning. These works emerge from living cultural traditions, carrying relationships between people, land, animals, ancestors, and the spirit world.

Notes: Bullet-dodging continued yesterday, as I had to rebuild another environment to fix another identified problem... only for it to remain after the rebuild. No. Wait. I forgot to clear the Redis Cache. Yes. There we go. Whew. Yes, dodging bullets would be exactly how that feels.
Well, there are a few more issues, but they don't seem to require another environment rebuild. That's a four-hour process right now, and I really, really hope that is the last one. We'll resolve these last wrinkles here, test for a few more days, and if all goes well, flip the switch on Wednesday.

Current Story: Last-Minute v2 Deployment Fires
Notes: I am happy to report all the identified data issues were resolved yesterday, and I'm glad they were; otherwise, I was getting close to rage-quitting altogether. 😅 It's a bit of an emotional roller coaster over here; I will not lie. Finding a data problem that caused a 4-day deployment delay will do this. There were two full 12-hour shifts in there, too, meaning a full circle of the Earth was dedicated to solving this grief, and there were still issues with the application even once the latest deployment was made.
Yes, I was able to get another deployment to Preview made, complete with a full rebuild of the file system, which took 4 hours. 😬 Yikes. But luckily, as I mentioned, the data looked good.
So then it was onto testing said data with our application and every. single. attempt. had an error.
Oof. See: said rage quitting. I stayed focused on the fact that these are edge cases, and 99% of the rest of the application works and looks great. So yeah, a roller coaster is a good way to describe my state right now.
All said, I am feeling good about everything again. I have a few TODOs/tasks on my plate that I will address today. We'll test this for a few more days to build confidence and make sure there aren't any other gremlins, and we'll shoot for Wednesday as the official deployment. 🤞🙏
