Your mouth says yes before your brain gets there. That automatic yes protects belonging — nobody’s mad, you stay in the group. Feels a little like survival. But your freedom need gets no vote in that doorway. Every yes you didn’t choose takes a little more from it. It doesn’t argue out loud. It waits. Then two days later a harmless text comes and you snap back short and cold. Now you feel like the bad guy. Resentment isn’t a character flaw. It’s a signal — an ignored need getting louder. You can’t control what people ask of you. You can control your next action. Try four words: “Let me check.” Then answer in an hour. That hour is where your thinking catches up. Yes, no, or yes but only until nine — whatever you pick, it’s a choice now, not a reflex. Resentment fades when freedom gets a vote. Stay Steddy.

Before you open the door, run the porch light test. Most of us judge a plan by how exciting it feels. That’s not a test — that’s just the feeling showing up first. Feelings follow what we do. Two options at the door: One thrilling (late night with the people who always have something going on) One boring (early shift, quiet house) Run both through the same two questions: Which of the five needs is this actually serving? Which old delivery system does it quietly resemble? If the thrilling one looks like the old nights with a new label, you already have your answer. Then ask the one that matters: what does each one actually deliver in thirty days — not tonight. Pick one pending decision and say this out loud before you move: “If I do this for thirty days, which need does it feed — and is it feeding it the way I used to?” Answer first. Then open the door.
