Matthew Pennycook is a widely respected minister.
To insinuate that the government "knowingly left" specific flaws in this legislation is totally disingenuous and entirely wrong. I was the minister responsible and I worked closely with officials, after I left government I sat on the bill committee that scrutinised this. I do not recall Pennycook ever mentioning these flaws while he was shadowing me or my successor.
He is talking about technical legislation drafted by government lawyers. The same ones that advised us, and are now advising him. Drafting errors occur every single day in government business, that's why governments put down amendments to their own legislation every day in both houses. Pennycook knows this full well.
I've been the first one to say we made mistakes in government and we got things wrong. But for Pennycook to make this allegation quite shameful and I hope he takes it down and apologises.
I've put down PQs on these so-called "flaws" and I've attached answers from the government to this post. Judge for yourself. We were making the running on this, after years of inaction by successive governments
And had he and his Housing Secretaries had the best interests of leaseholders at heart, as soon as he had got his feet under the desk and discovered these drafting errors, they could have taken action. It's now more than two years since they won a landslide and they've not tackled it. So spare me this type of misinformation and criticism!

Ignore the misinformation.
We need to fix a small number of specific flaws that the previous government knowingly left in its Leasehold and Freehold Reform Act 2024 to ensure that the enfranchisement measures in that piece of legislation can operate as intended.
We have made clear we intend to make those fixes through our forthcoming Commonhold and Leasehold Reform Bill.
Once we have done so and can implement the new valuation process, it will be cheaper and easier for leaseholders to extend their lease or buy their freehold.

Vicky, the government isn’t used to scrutiny on leasehold and is lashing out.
In opposition, Pennycook pushed for enfranchisement premiums to be “as cheap as possible” for leaseholders.
In the consultation that closed Wednesday, which you didn’t cover, the government U-turns:

The small number of specific flaws include shared owners in blocks like mine being unable to extend their lease.
A reminder that under the previous @UKLabour govt it was apparently fine for housing associations to sell short underleases they *knew* could not be extended.

And if you add fraud and cyber fraud?
Some chatter on social media would have you believe that crime is out of control.
The facts tell a different story.
As @frasernelson has shown in his Substack today:
Violence is at its lowest level since the crime survey began in 1981.
Robbery is at a record low.
Crime, excluding fraud, is 78% down on its peak in 1995.
And the stats show this Government is delivering on its promises too:
Knife crime is down 11%.
Knife murders are at their lowest level in 35 years.
Thefts including phone snatching have fallen by 20% in the last year alone.
But I know there is more that we must do, and we will:
We’ve put more than 3,800 extra neighbourhood officers into roles, with named, contactable officers for every neighbourhood.
We’re introducing the most significant reforms to policing in a generation.
We are tackling rising rates of violence against women and girls through our landmark strategy.
And we are tackling crimes like fraud, more prevalent in our increasingly online world, with £250 million directed to this challenge in our Fraud Strategy published this year.

We're disappointed that @mtpennycook has tabled an amendment to remove a review of shared ownership from the Social Housing Bill.
Do you think a statutory review is important. Check the next post on how to let MPs know.

Heads up if you run a WordPress site: PHP, the software your website runs on, released an urgent security update today for two critical holes (CVE-2026-109618 and CVE-2026-109619). Your host installs it, not you, but it's worth checking it's done. What to do in 5 minutes:In your WordPress dashboard go to Tools → Site Health → Info → Server and note your PHP version.
You're fixed if it's 8.5.12, 8.4.27, 8.3.36 or 8.2.35, or newer on the same line.
If not, ask your host: "Please update our PHP to the security release of 21 October 2026 (CVE-2026-109618 and 109619)."
On PHP 8.1 or older? PHP no longer fixes those. Ask your host to move you to 8.2 or newer.
Happy to help anyone who's unsure what their host told them.

Already have a grace period, will just mean people will have 10mins free parking, I have never paid a ticket for a medical emergency on appeal. Most legitimate tickets are sub 100 pound already. More tinkering whilst 5 million leaseholders and shared owners linger in misery. 😏
🚨 NEW: Andy Burnham has announced changes to car parking fines
- Drivers will have a 5-minute grace period to decide whether to park and 10 minutes to leave after a parking session ends
- A £20 maximum charge on appeal for minor mistakes, such as entering the wrong number plate or not displaying a permit
- Charges will also be cancelled on appeal for breakdowns, medical emergencies or broken ticket machines
- The £100 cap on charges will remain
- The rules will come into force as soon as possible and operators that break them will lose access to DVLA data

I asked my 18 brothers and sisters and they don't know either.

@andyburnham @UKLabour are you listening?
Was he getting the work done tho? Does this mean he got 5 x annual leave as well as 5x civil service pension contributions?
Fair play 😂, I might start applying...
This is literally my feed.
A post and a response. It's quite funny but is that all @X has to offer tonight? 😂🤷 Wtf? Don't matter how many times I reload, it's just this...
Huh? What "service" is being paid for? Rent? Grey but ridiculous because they are not there. Mortgage? Usually keeps going until you are depleted. What an unfair stupid situation. What is insurance actually for in these contexts?
I wonder who benefitted from this pointless waste of our money?
Planning a long drive?
@googlemaps won’t just give directions, it will help you find the cheapest fuel near you.
Today our Fuel Finder scheme has been rolled out on Google Maps to support millions of drivers to save at the pump.
gov.uk/government/news/drive…
Thanks Google.
I know people are worried about fuel prices. And I get it. You get to the pump, watch the numbers climb, and wonder why it's costing so much more than it used to.
The reality is that global events are pushing up costs, and families here at home are feeling the impact.
But I won't accept that there's nothing I can do to help.
That's why from today, you'll be able to see petrol and diesel prices on Google Maps, compare nearby stations and find the cheapest option before you fill up.
It's a small change, but if there's a practical way to help people keep more money in their pocket, I'll do it.
