Best description I've heard of Labour's tax on private schools:
"A tax that raises less than it costs isn’t a tax.
It’s spite with a spreadsheet.
Aimed at the parents who sacrificed, and dressed up as fairness."

They circle above and then swoop in on the hated prey. ‘Nothing to do with VAT.’ Never ever have I seen more adults so desperate to ignore and deny the truth. And that truth denies children education, teachers and staff jobs, families a community and the whole of the UK an architectural fabric. That’s just the surface. Underneath lies the ‘unintended consequences’ of state schools forced to carry the new ‘burden.’ The politics of envy that ended with the politics of destruction for all. And ‘adults’ try to defend it. Is it any wonder these crass, grotesque policies keep being pushed through? Because the crass push them.
Nothing to do with the VAT - private school numbers have been in decline for more than a decade (due to birthrate) - almost every one that has closed has had financial issues from before Covid.

Removing VAT on school fees should be one of the first acts of an incoming Conservative government led by Kemi. Can't come soon enough. For this and many other reasons.
Thank you for sharing, @SteveLawrence_ . This shows what we already know: This tax was never about improving education, but punishing children and aspiration.
It's time to repeal this tax.

The numbers don’t lie. Labour’s VAT tax on education has driven 43,126 kids out of independent schools, 3 times their forecast and forced 251+ schools to close or merge.
Calling this “modest” is a joke. It’s an attack on aspiration. Scrap this spiteful tax now
The @Telegraph reports that civil servants told ex EdSec @bphillipsonMP that the impact of @UKLabour's spiteful tax on children was "not transformative" and that the exodus of children was "modest" according to an FOI request. The data doesn't back this, and it's time to end this tax.
@SabriSun_Miller, thank you for your helpful reporting. We would love to see the FOI documents as well.

We don't know what civl servants define as "modest", but analysis of their own data suggests anything but. There are 43,126 fewer children in independent schools in Jan 2026 (compared to Jan 2024), which is *3x* higher than the Govt forecasted. That is anything but "modest".

So the government taxes me for paying for my own education…
…and wants to subsidise European student to the tune of 1/2 a billion.
Europeans don’t pay taxes in the uk but get an education subsidy.
Whereas I pay taxes in the uk and pay an education tax.
Disgraceful
Andy Burnham is planning to spend up to £450m a year subsidising tuition fees for European students.
In a major giveaway to Brussels, the Prime Minister is reportedly considering cutting fees for EU students from £38,000 to as low as £9,535, in line with domestic UK undergraduates

I’m wondering if Mr Burnham may like to demands answers as to why so many schools have closed under labours tenure? If he can do it for Poundland. And no - they weren’t all about to collapse anyway and no, more did not open than close if that saves anyone an attempt at a chippy answer. Remember when writing, children lost education, adults lost jobs, communities lost income and the treasury lost income, state lost budgets and gained students.

Interesting contrast. Independent-school fees attract VAT, while eligible state-school PTA donations benefit from Gift Aid. Wealth and privilege don’t divide neatly along school lines. Some families sacrifice a great deal to pay fees, while others can afford generous donations.
Right @EducationNotTax we're all for parents doing their best for their kids.
So it's great that PTA parents in state schools are doing so! A lot!!!!!
I mean, this really is great but also.....

Blatant abuse of the system at detriment to poir schools. The average SS parent pays just £8/m donations.
All these high payment 'donations' should be treated as fees, or PS fees treated as donations.

It’s hard to narrow down Labour’s most malignant policy, but wrecking children’s educations and destroying sometimes centuries-old institutions so their coveted buildings can be seized by Chinese developers and private equity has to be at least in the top 3

The electorate aren’t goldfish. Our memories are long enough to recall June 2024, when you declared that trans-identified men with penises should be able to use women’s public bathrooms. It took a Supreme Court ruling to force you to uphold women’s rights, and now you pose as our bold champion? Please.
The time for talk has long passed. This government is putting its money where its mouth is when it comes to supporting women and girls.
We'll back practical action to confine misogyny to the history books - in public services, workplaces, and online.

Tax him all he has, then let him know
That you won't be done Till he has no dough.
When he screams and when he hollers;
Then tax him more, take all his dollars
Then tax his coffin, Tax his grave,
Tax the sod in Which he's laid...
Put these words Upon his tomb:
‘Taxes drove me to my doom...'
When he's gone, Do not relax,
It's time to apply Inheritance Tax!

Reeves’s stamp duty raid backfires as Treasury LOSES £500m in receipts. Also, HMRC WRITES OFF £13bn in tax as businesses collapse under Labour. Labour increased capital gains tax and the money coming into the Treasury FELL.
How incompetent are Labour, every measure they take to try and grab more of our money fails and they end up with less money. Financially illiterate. Policies which are punitive only ending up with the Treasury being worse off. Labour never learn. Get Labour out.

Where is all the money from taxing private schools?
Clue, so many left or changed their choice to move into state there is none & now state schools just get worse because Labour priced out a chunk of people who would have paid for their own kids but now won’t.
Stupid Labour.

Labour’s “fully funded” education “policy” strikes again.
Fresh from reversing Bridget Phillipson’s offsted changes, Lucy Powell is now reversing her own more recent statement on fully funded pay rises.
Their ONLY education priority was to tax independent education. Clowns
How disappointing that the head of comms at the National Trust thinks like this - and blocks those who disagree.
