the indian engineering dream has turned into a nightmare. our society is in a cultural hangover from the 90s and early 2000s when graduating out of an IIT as an engineer most likely meant financial freedom for you and your family. this is why we remain obsessed with high JEE ranks and pursuing an engineering degree (ideally CS but printing engineering also works if it’s an IIT lol) but the reality couldn’t be further from the truth: 1) the salaries of a starting engineering at an indian big tech company has increased ~45% over the last 14 years while the CEOs of these companies have enjoyed a hearty ~1500% rise. (instagram.com/reel/DZFb1j_vV…) 2) this slow growth coincides with an increasingly high cost of living. the engineer’s pay has not even managed to match the rise in rents in a city like BLR where one would presumably move for their shiny new job. a ~70% rise in rents while the city’s potholes have only gotten bigger — one would assume the shine will catch rust pretty quickly. to compare this growth wrt to the indian economy — if you joined infosys in 2000 as a fresher, you would have to work 17 hours at your job to acquire 1 unit of NIFTY. an absolute steal when you find out that the same NIFTY unit would take you 138 hours today.
