The 4NCL refused to let the UK's only elite women's chess team compete in the top flight as an all-women's team (!), so they enlisted World No. 11 Anish Giri to be the token man on the team! 🤪

🇳🇱 Anish Giri: "Magnus likes to take ground, I don't want to give any"
Anish Giri on his competitive relationship with Magnus Carlsen:
"I think he's very competitive, and we have a bit of a personality clash. In the sense that I'm not a very aggressive person as such, but I don't want to give any ground, and he likes to take ground. If you let him take the ground, he will welcome you to his circle of friends, but I always wanted to stand my ground. In some sense there was this clash.
But essentially, if you have two people that compete with each other regularly, even if they would be great friends, there would always be some massive tension underneath. It is very hard, especially in a game like chess. You're trying to outsmart each other, outwit each other, look for each other's weaknesses. It's very hard to maintain genuine friendship and compete."

1/ 🚨 GM Mukhiddin Madaminov (2586 Elo), best-known as Javokhir Sindarov's second until a week ago, has delivered one of the biggest surprises of the year!
As the lowest seed in the field, he just won the UzChess Cup Masters 2026 with 5.5/9 points and a fantastic 2790 TPR. Beat Nepo, Vidit, Mamedyarov in classical, then won the blitz TB over Vokhidov 2-0.
🧵 I will break down why his rise was predictable 👇

The rating system needs some expert tweaking and hopefully @vlad_chess's book reaches many people, including the right people to make real life improvements. Would love to see it in printed format too!
1/ 🚨LAUNCH MODE: ACTIVATED 🔥
The Rating Revolution is LIVE!
After months of forensic work, with every angle dissected, the full book is now available as an instant digital download.
This isn’t just theory. This is the audit that proves what every serious player has felt for years.
Who’s ready to stop leaving points on the table? 👇
About time someone said more on this underrated topic (pun intended)! Especially backed with competent mathematical analysis. I know @vlad_chess has carefully researched his facts and put a lot of hard work into this, so his input should be very valuable.@FIDE_chess @EmilSutovsky
Imagine you are 1900 Elo. You are paired against a 1500 Elo junior. You play carefully, equalize after every complication, and split the point.
Over the board it feels like a “correct” draw against an equal practical opponent. On the rating sheet it is a penalty of -8.4 Elo points.
You did not blunder, but your number still drops.
This is no longer rare noise. It is the new normal.

"Interesting". Apparently winning five games in a row used to be suspicious to 2008 Hikaru... Now the limit has increased to at least 50! @GMHikaru @VBkramnik 😁

At the age of 7, Couchi was taken from his family in St. Croix (Danish West Indies) and "gifted" to the Queen of Sweden Lovisa Ulrika in 1757. in Stockholm, he was given a new name —or rather, five— and from then on was known as Adolf Ludvig Gustav Fredrik Albert Badin.
Fortunately it seems he was appreciated and well cared for: rather than being a servant, he became a valued member of the royal household. He made a successful career as the Court Secretary and diarist, Royal Meteorologist, diplomat, and manager of three royal palaces, serving first the Queen and then Princess Sophia Albertine.
Highly educated, Badin amassed an extensive private library of around 800-900 books, a considerable number at the time. Among them, there was a copy of "Traité des jeux de cartes, de dames, d'échecs". His intelligence and wit were well known, and probably that's what Gustaf Lundberg, Swedish rococo pastelist and portrait painter, wanted to represent when he portrayed him at the chess board, in 1775. This picture hangs now in the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm.
