1. On #September11, we pause to honor the innocent lives lost and reflect on the enduring principles that define our shared humanity. True resilience lies not only in how we remember, but in how we uphold the foundational ideals of freedom, democracy, and respect for all..++

UN Special Rapporteurs are urging Turkey to stop targeting human rights defenders and lawyers under terrorism charges, warning that anti-terror laws are being misused to criminalize legitimate human rights work.
Cases cited include individuals prosecuted for providing aid to prisoners, participating in peaceful protests, or carrying out legal defense work, actions protected under international law.
The experts stress that such laws must not be used to restrict freedom of expression, association, and peaceful assembly, calling for urgent reform and an end to the criminalization of civil society.

🏛️ Is it a "strange time" to be in D.C. advocating for the humanities? We don’t think so.
In a world of complex global issues, the humanities are the toolkit we need for the present. Our CEO and Board are on the Hill today to make the case for why this funding is non-negotiable.

📸✨ A Night of Unity, Peace & Shared Purpose ✨🌙
Annual Ramadan Friendship Dinner, hosted by Peace Islands Institute and the Turkish Cultural Center NJ, brought together over 150 community leaders, public officials, faith representatives, and neighbors under one roof in Weehawken, NJ to honor the spirit of Ramadan.
From powerful speeches by leaders like @RepLaMonica , Mathew J. Platkin @NewJerseyOAG , and Laurie Doran, Director of @NJOHSP—who reminded us that “peace and safety go hand in hand”—to deeply moving interfaith reflections by Rabbi Lenny, Pastor Phil, Imam Gazi Aga, and Harkishan Singh, the evening was a heartfelt celebration of compassion, understanding, and shared values.
🎶 Guests were treated to a beautiful performance from Nirvana Music & Art School, filling the room with music and meaning. Attendees also explored traditional Ebru art and visited the calligraphy booth for personalized artwork as keepsakes of the evening.
💬 Keynote speaker Dr. Nuray Yurt inspired us with the message that “humanity is about action” and called on us to embrace and celebrate diversity as a strength.
🗣️ As the evening came to a close, local leaders offered moving reflections that captured the heart of the night:
• Mayor Richard F. Turner of Weehawken shared, “It’s not easy to build peace in this universe—but this dinner shows it’s possible.”
• @BergenCountySo expressed feeling like “part of the Peace Islands family,” highlighting the values of love, empathy, and inclusion.
• Chief John R. Russo of @RutherfordPDNJ praised the gathering as “a symbol of peace in our multicultural state.”
✨ Finally, Nebi Demirsoy, Executive Director of the @TCCNJ, closed the evening with a powerful message:
“Together, we can create a global community where compassion, respect, and love guide our actions.”
🌙 This dinner was more than a meal—it was a living example of what we can achieve when we come together with open hearts and shared purpose.
💙 Thank you to everyone who helped make this evening unforgettable. We look forward to continuing this tradition in the years to come.

Rep. Scott Perry’s statement highlights a grave violation of human rights as Turkey detains 15 teenage girls, forcing them to testify against their parents. Such actions, described as despotic, starkly contrast to the principles expected from a NATO member and ally of the United States. This blatant disregard for the rule of law and the fundamental rights of minors is unacceptable and undermines international norms. Perry’s condemnation underscores the urgent need for global accountability and advocacy to protect vulnerable individuals from authoritarian practices.
Turkey has detained 15 teenage girls - minors - forcing them to testify against their parents. These are the actions of a despot, not an American ally and member of NATO. This violation of the basic rule of law is completely unacceptable.
