Can you *really* say you are an expert in criminal justice and public safety if you aren't subscribed to our weekly Round-Up email of news stories? If not, then frankly, the jury is still out on that question. What is the Round-Up? Here's a little taste of the front page: 1/3

The Arcane Texas Fact of the Day: Almost 50% of the population of the Texas Panhandle lives within the Amarillo city limits. I just did the math. Using the latest figures, the population of Amarillo is 205,130. The population of the 26 counties comprising the Texas Panhandle is 427, 927. That works out to 47.9%. However, if you include the entire Amarillo metropolitan area, rather than just the city itself, the proportion rises to approximately 60% of the Panhandle's population.

Law school prepares you to analyze and argue complex legal issues. Practicing law prepares you to argue with seven people about whether a deposition can happen on a Thursday.

I'm not saying barrier-free access to the internet in our pocket was a mistake but
this is really striking. americans aren't losing faith in just *leaders* they're losing faith in *the people itself* that is the real threat to the republican form of government.

In trial, two is one and one is none. If you don't have at least two ways to get that exhibit into evidence or get that witness to admit that thing, it's not happening.

By far the coolest part of the Texas Election Code is the chapter allowing astronauts, many of whom live around Houston, to vote from space. 🚀🌕👨‍🚀

The head of the Texas Juvenile Justice Department, which manages the state's five youth prisons, has resigned. It's not immediately clear why TJJD Executive Director Shandra Carter stepped down, but the decision came after the agency placed all of its youth prisons under an extended lockdown. texastribune.org/2026/10/23/…

Don’t Let This Be Your Teen’s Last Time on the Road. According to the @NHTSAgov, 2,162 young drivers died in traffic crashes in 2024. That’s 2,162 families changed forever. Start the safe-driving conversation before it’s too late. #NationalTeenDriverSafetyWeek #PublicSafety

Q: But has it resulted in less inter-personal crime? 🤔
Americans have a "revealed preference" for doing less of basically everything except going online and I have serious doubts that this is making us happier. slowboring.com/p/americans-n…

Should Texas Build a Statewide Prosecutor for One County? | Rep. @CarlTepper Governor Abbott wants a statewide prosecutor. Rep. Carl Tepper is not sure Texas should build one because one county keeps reelecting its district attorney. On the day of the House Select Committee on Governmental Oversight hearing, Tepper (R–Lubbock) walks through the case against Travis County DA José Garza, missing indictment deadlines, a three-strikes idea for repeat misdemeanors, and why he would rather not fund a new statewide office for a problem in one county. @bradswail

Most of my readers at Original Jurisdiction are lawyers, judges, or law students. FWIW, they don’t draw a distinction between “lawyer” and “attorney” (screenshot and link to poll, which remains open, below). LINK: bit.ly/4dNTS9W
