On this day in 1912, five days after being shot, TR told his nurse the bullet wasn't troubling him. "Not a bit. I'm feeling bully." He took callers all day. By evening his surgeons: "the patient is fatigued... not at all beyond the range of danger." trlibrary.com/tr/post-presid…

#OTD in 1905, TR left on a nine-day Southern tour. At the Richmond luncheon: "Next only to a man's having worn the blue comes the fact of the man's having worn the gray, as entitling him to honor in my sight." He never mentioned disfranchisement. trlibrary.com/tr/presidency/…

#OTD in 1901, the country learned Booker T. Washington had dined at the White House. A senator said a thousand Black Southerners must be killed "before they will learn their place again." A Black paper: "No color line in the White House." trlibrary.com/tr/complex-leg…

125 years ago today, Booker T. Washington became the first African American to dine as a guest of the President and his family at the White House. It was a working dinner about Southern appointments. Washington took a train to New York the same night. trlibrary.com/tr/presidency/…

What happens when you give a group of landscape architecture students a beautiful landscape, a sketchbook, and a few hours? ✏️ Last week, first-year landscape architecture students from Iowa State University added the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library to an annual regional field trip, and they came ready to put pencil to paper. After touring the Library, students headed outside to study the site firsthand. Each selected three favorite site elements to document through sketches and cross sections, along with elevation drawings that captured the landscape from a different perspective. The sketches were impressive, but so were the students behind them. They were happy to share their work, explain the assignment, and even teach the TRPL team a thing or two along the way! Thank you, @IowaStateU for making TRPL part of the journey. Visits like this are exactly what the campus is for: learning, observing, asking questions, and experiencing the landscape firsthand. TRPL looks forward to welcoming more students to learn from the landscape in the years ahead. Come back anytime, Cyclones! 🌪️✏️ #presidentiallibrary #landscapearchitecture #schoolgroups

#OTD in 1912, shot in the chest in Milwaukee, TR's first concern was the man who shot him: "Officers, take charge of him, and see that there is no violence done to him." Then he spoke for eighty minutes. The bullet was never removed. trlibrary.com/tr/post-presid…

#OTD in 1902, at a quarter to ten at night, there was a knock at the President's door: J. Pierpont Morgan, down from New York with the operators' answer. The coal strike was 154 days old. TR was on crutches, with a general standing by to seize the mines. trlibrary.com/tr/presidency/…

#OTD in 1912, a Michigan weekly printed that TR "gets drunk, too, and that not infrequently." He sued. At trial the publisher admitted he could find no one who had seen it. TR then asked the court for nominal damages. Michigan law set them at six cents. trlibrary.com/tr/post-presid…
