As autumn fades into winter, bold, prickly teasel seed heads still bring wonderful structure to frosty hedgerows. If youโ€™re lucky, you might spot a colourful goldfinch or two feasting on their seeds. The Anglo-Saxons called these beautiful little birds โ€˜thistle-tweakersโ€™! #nature

A colourful goldfinch clings almost upside down to a prickly teasel seed head, probing for seeds with its fine, pointed bill. Its bright red face, black and white head, warm brown plumage and striking yellow wing markings stand out against a softly painted background of grasses.

The crop of Oil Seed Rape on one of my more productive fields has partly failed. Of course the failed bit is on the least productive area, but it is good for scrap metal..... ๐Ÿ˜‚
