As a newer viewer, but a devoted fan, I wanted to share how Stargate saved my life 3 years ago.
Since my story seemed to reach a lot of people on Reddit, I caved and got premium so I could join the #SaveStargate conversation here too:
I first saw the Stargate movie while I was in a psych ward against my will, with the tip of my spine dislocated. This injury was missed and my pain was dismissed as being in my head, while I had a neck injury that was almost universally fatal and my mind had given up.
I fell in love immediately with the movie, and replayed it in my head for the next four days while I was held there, clinging to a neck brace terrified I wouldn't make it yet having no idea what was so wrong with me.
I had no access to the Internet to know a whole world of the universe existed outside that movie, I thought it was just an isolated glimmer of distraction and hope in an unimaginable nightmare.
When I was released, my mom and I went directly to pick up a hospital bed from Craigslist because I could no longer sleep in a normal bed. SG-1 was playing on an old TV in the sketchy mobile home the bed was in.
I wasn’t sure if I was going to end my life when we left the hospital, but I took this show’s existence and the extraordinary coincidence that it had been playing as some sort of sign to stay for just a little longer.
Somehow each episode kept me going through nights I thought I wouldn't make it, and then nights turned into months.
Eight months would pass having no idea if I would walk again, rotting away in that hospital bed from Craigslist. The show became my lifeline, what I would turn to when the world inevitably became too much each day.
I’ve had twelve neurosurgeries and relearned to walk since I first saw the movie, all while the show and each variation played on repeat in the background like a soundtrack.
As I lay dying from septic shock across the country, unsure if antibiotics could save me. As the youngest person in the nursing home for the two months I needed IV antibiotics afterwards. As I got my second spontaneous spinal dislocation and learned no matter how much better I got, it could be gone in an instant.
This show and its books are what have kept me remotely sane. The characters, the vicarious adventures, and the jokes. Life has been passing me by for a while as I go in and out of being bedridden and ill, but this series has always been there.
The first time I saw the movie was only three years ago, but in that short time Stargate has had a profound impact on my life. That’s why I think this new series is so important, and why the logic for canceling it over concern that only older fans would enjoy it feels flawed.
You don’t have to be a lifelong fan to fall deeply in love with a universe and immerse yourself in it. You don’t know how many people might need this series and not even know it yet.
Canceling it not only disappoints the fans who already love Stargate, but it takes away the chance for another generation to find the same escape and hope that me and many others have found in it.
(Drawing done during those 8 months bedridden)

It must feel so liberating after a lifetime of what I can only imagine was immense pressure to maintain beauty to now have a personal brand almost entirely based around being as creatively grotesque as possible

Flashback Friday – A Slice of Humble Pie
Last Saturday night, Lonnie and I had the privilege of attending the Regional Emmy Awards. Never in my wildest dreams could I have imagined finding myself there as the writer and voice behind an Emmy-nominated piece.
It all started with a message I wrote for the Kansas City Royals clubhouse. My only intention was to inspire the players as they prepared for the season and remind them just how much they mean to fans like me. I wanted them to understand that baseball is about so much more than what happens between the lines. For some of us, it represents memories, joy, connection, and an escape from the battles we face every day.
I had absolutely no idea what that message would eventually become.
Someone saw something special in those words and had the creativity and vision to turn them into something far bigger than I ever imagined. A video featuring my voice narrating while some of my most treasured memories with the Royals played across the screen.
That video was played in the Royals clubhouse to kick off the season, featured several times during Royals broadcasts, aired on national television, and viewed by hundreds of thousands of people.
You know what that means? It became something much bigger than a message to a baseball team. It became an opportunity to raise awareness for ALS.
That wasn’t my original intention, but looking back, I couldn’t be more grateful that it happened. Sometimes the impact of something we do reaches far beyond anything we could have planned.
And yes, it even earned an Emmy nomination!
Unfortunately, we came up short on Saturday night. I’m not going to pretend I wasn’t disappointed. I was. Honestly, it still stings a little. I will never lose my competitive spirit. I would have loved to bring home that Emmy, and for a moment, I had to swallow a pretty big slice of humble pie.
But here’s what I’ve been reminded of: Sometimes we get so caught up in the outcome that we forget to appreciate the incredible journey that got us there.
I may not have walked away with an Emmy, but I walked away with something that no trophy could ever measure. An opportunity to share my story, raise awareness for a disease that desperately needs more attention, and remind hundreds of thousands of people that life with ALS is still a life worth living. Every day is worth fighting for.
I’m incredibly grateful to all the people who believed in my words, saw the potential in the message, and brought it to life. To the Royals organization for continuing to make memories that mean more to me than they will ever know. And to Lonnie, who was right beside me, sharing another unforgettable experience.
So, while I would have loved to add an Emmy to the trophy case, I’m learning that not every meaningful moment comes with an award.
Sometimes the greatest reward is knowing your words reached someone, your story made a difference, and something you never expected became an opportunity to make an impact.
And if that’s the consolation prize, I’ll take it every single time.

my deepest darkest kinkiest most fucked up fantasy is that there’s a hospital with all the doctors I need in one spot and they all communicate and are truly invested in me and work together and figure it out and I get better. and its $35

i wish depression were an emergency. I wish someone could take one look at how sick I am and go “oh my god, we need to get you to a hospital!” and then when we get there I get rushed into surgery and the surgeons say “it’s a good thing you brought her here when you did, this is a seriously advanced case” and then they put me under and spend the next ten hours pulling metres of long, sticky black strands of gunk out of my body, throwing it immediately into an incinerator so that it can’t infect anyone else. And then they could stitch me back up and I could rest a few days, and when I leave the hospital everyone can see how much better I am and they congratulate me saying “well done, you’ve been so brave, I’m so glad you’re ok. I love you
