Frequency is linked to supply and demand... If there's more generation than consumption frequency speeds up. If there's more demand than supply it slows down
Electrical equipment is sensitive to frequency (which is the rate at which current and voltage change in an alternating current system)
Historically demand was very dependent on the weather but fairly predictably. But now a lot of generation is as well. In real time clouds and gusts of wind make a difference. Weather based generation makes it much harder to keep supply and demand balanced and the frequency stable
The system operator has to manage this in real time. The more intermittency there is the more expensive this balancing is
Conventional generation has a property called inertia which acts as a drag on frequency change. The frequency is set up in the first place by the turbines in conventional power stations rotating at 3000 RPM in synchronicity
As you replace conventional generation with wind and solar which don't generate synchronous ac natively (they use electronics to convert the electricity they generate into 50Hz ac) you both increase the variability of generation and reduce inertia so frequency becomes more volatile
