Speaker Jacob Marksons Oboth (West Budama Central County) says Uganda's Indian business community, which he estimates at 25,000 to 27,000 people, contributes about 65% of the country's income tax revenue.
He made the claim while attending the BRICS Parliamentary Forum in New Delhi.
The same percentage was reported in October 2025, citing Ministry of Finance reports, when President Museveni commended the Indian community's contribution to Uganda's economy.

The makeup of Uganda’s delegation has drawn positive attention in New Delhi. Coverage of the Forum has described it as a bipartisan delegation, led by Speaker Jacob Oboth and including Leader of the Opposition Hon Joel Ssenyonyi, alongside Hon Betty Nakisita Mpongo, Hon Sowedi Ismail Mulemya and Hon Annet Katusiime Mugisha.
The Russian State Duma delegation took note too. At a meeting on the sidelines, the Russians said that bringing the Opposition to a BRICS forum showed shared values across party lines. Their own delegation also included opposition MPs.
Speaker Oboth had introduced Hon Ssenyonyi to them with a joke: “This is the man who opposes everything we do in Parliament. So I brought him to oppose us here, even.”

That cross-party unity supports the delegation’s goals in India. Speaker Oboth praised the Indian community in Uganda for its contribution to the economy. Uganda is India’s leading coffee supplier, and there is room to grow trade and investment between the two countries.
“We are here to build partnerships that bring trade, investment and skills home to Ugandans,” the Speaker said.

🇺🇬 WHAT WILL UGANDA BRING BACK FROM BRICS?
On 29 September 2026, Speaker Jacob Marksons Oboth (West Budama Central County) urged MPs undertaking foreign engagements to return with lessons, partnerships and opportunities that benefit Uganda.
Now attending the BRICS Parliamentary Forum in New Delhi from 26 to 27 October, he says parliamentary diplomacy should open doors to trade, investment, skills and technology.
The next accountability point is what concrete outcomes Parliament reports from the visit.

This morning at Samvidhan Sadan in New Delhi, I was pleased to meet the Prime Minister of India, Shri @NarendraModi, at the opening of the 12th BRICS Parliamentary Forum.
Our exchange builds on the warm engagements we have had since we arrived, including with my counterpart, Lok Sabha Speaker Shri Om Birla.
Uganda and India share a long friendship rooted in history and trade, and in the many Indians who have made Uganda their home and contribute so much to our economy.
As a BRICS partner country, Uganda is here to deepen these ties. Our two-way trade is about $1.35 billion a year, and there is room to grow it, especially by bringing more Ugandan products to the Indian market and attracting investment in processing at home.
I thank Prime Minister Modi and the people of India for their hospitality.
For God and My Country.
