It's the same thing with movies, don't expect a bunch of straight dudes to go watch a movie about a gay romance. There's nothing wrong with that. I don't expect a bunch of gay dudes to run out and see movies about heterosexual romance.
The problem is, If you make a game with a bunch of gay shit in it, and the game depends on sales numbers from straight dudes for it to be successful and not lose a billion dollars, then you're unfortunately going to run into a situation where you have to close the studio and fire everyone because you're completely fucking braindead.
Understanding your audience and demographics is like marketing 101, but game devs have decided that shit doesn't matter because this sort of content is what they have decided people "should" want.
