Over time, our goal has come into sharper focus: a government that is more accountable and more open with the people it serves. We’re pursuing that through several approaches at once, because no single strategy is enough on its own. But we can’t do this alone. We need your help. We Keep Going

*** Elections Canada Verification Letters by Province and Territory, June 2022 *** Letters mailed to electors whose National Register records had not been updated or confirmed in several years, measured against registered electors 1. British Columbia received nearly half of all letters (45.8%) despite holding just 13.5% of Canada’s registered electors, more than Ontario and Quebec combined. 2. About 1 in every 95 registered electors in BC received a letter, compared with roughly 1 in 320 nationally. BC’s rate is about 3.4 times the national rate and more than four times Ontario’s. 3. Every other province and territory fell below its share of registered electors. Ontario, second in total letters, was still below the national rate (24.9 vs. 31.0 per 10,000). The territories received almost none: 7 letters to Yukon and 1 to the Northwest Territories. Nunavut received none.

*** British Columbia Ballot Boxes *** Elections BC has announced that the initial count is complete, with 7,268 ballot boxes reported so far. Compare that with 2024. During that election, media published a total of 2,420 ballot boxes, nearly 5,000 fewer than this count, and Elections BC said two ballot boxes in every riding would receive “extra validation.” Yet when I asked Elections BC directly, it told me it does not track ballot box totals at all. So where did the published total come from? To find out, I filed Freedom of Information requests for the ballot box totals and for the results reporting Elections BC provided to the media consortium. Both were denied. The ballot box statistics were deemed a function of the Chief Electoral Officer and excluded from public access under Section 3. The public is left with a total reported in the media that can’t be verified, from an agency that says it doesn’t keep one. We Keep Going

An 8-year-old boy was beaten with a baseball bat, shot with a BB gun, burned with cigarettes, forced to eat cat feces and his own vomit, and locked inside a cabinet overnight. His name was Gabriel Fernandez. The man convicted of torturing him to death, Isauro Aguirre, was sentenced to death in California. Now, Gov. Gavin Newsom is moving to commute that sentence, along with those of hundreds of other condemned inmates, to life without parole. For months, Gabriel was subjected to horrific abuse at the hands of Aguirre and his mother, Pearl Fernandez. He was beaten, burned, sprayed with pepper spray, bound and gagged. By the time first responders reached his Palmdale home on May 22, 2013, his small body was covered in injuries. He had a fractured skull, broken ribs, missing teeth, burns and BB pellets embedded in his flesh. Prosecutors presented evidence that Aguirre targeted Gabriel in part because he believed the little boy was gay. Gabriel’s teacher repeatedly reported signs of abuse. Child protective services investigated. Sheriff’s deputies visited the home. The institutions responsible for protecting him had multiple opportunities to intervene. Gabriel died on May 24, 2013. He was just eight years old. In 2017, a jury convicted Aguirre of first-degree murder with the special circumstance of intentional torture. In 2018, he was sentenced to death. Gabriel’s mother received life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. Newsom’s proposed commutations would not release Aguirre from prison or overturn his conviction. They would replace his death sentence with life imprisonment without parole. A jury heard the evidence of what Aguirre did to Gabriel Fernandez and sentenced him to death. That is the punishment California’s governor is now seeking to change.
BREAKING: California Gov. Gavin Newsom has commuted the death sentences of all 548 people on the state’s death row to life without parole, in the largest mass commutation in modern U.S. history.

I have been waiting 24 years for my neighbor David Westerfield to be executed for the kidnapping and murder of my 7-year-old neighbor, Danielle van Dam. And now thanks to @GavinNewsom, it looks like it will never happen. I was 13 when he abducted her from her bedroom in the middle of the night in 2002. I would never equate what I experienced with what her family suffered, but Danielle's murder devastated our whole neighborhood, and me personally. I was a sensitive kid and it was a major contributor to my mental health decline in adolescence. In the 20 days between her disappearance and his arrest, I developed insomnia and spent those nights walking around the house checking the locks on the doors and windows. I followed the trial closely. As we learned the horrific details, I couldn't stop thinking about what she endured during the 3 days he had her. Her body was found dumped off the side of a road 25 days after she went missing. It was too decomposed to test for sexual assault, but we all knew that's why he took her. He was also convicted of possessing child sexual abuse material found on his computer. There was never any doubt about Westerfield's guilt. There was an abundance of forensic evidence, including her blood on his clothing and in his motorhome. In 2019, the California Supreme Court unanimously upheld his conviction and death sentence. Shortly afterward, Newsom imposed his moratorium. And now he does THIS. California voters rejected abolishing the death penalty in both 2012 and 2016, and even voted to expedite executions. All these years, I've held on to the hope that someone would eventually take office who respected the will of California voters and would allow these sentences to be carried out. It's especially insulting to hear Newsom go on about morality, as if he is morally superior to those of us whose lives were affected by these heinous crimes and who want to see the perpetrators brought to justice. I'm hoping the California Supreme Court can stop Westerfield's commutation.

What a heartbreaking week it has been. Sir Patrick Stewart was a friend, a colleague, and a magnificent actor. From the stage to the bridge of the Enterprise, he brought intelligence, grace, and a deep sense of humanity to everything he did. Captain Picard stood for the best of us, and so did the man who played him. I was filled with affection and admiration for him and his work. My heart goes out to Sunny and his family. He will be deeply missed.
