Today is the official release date for my new book, First Among Equals: Visions of Equality before Egalitarianism (Belknap, 2026). It explores how and why “equality” became, rather suddenly, a basis on which ordinary men and women could make political demands in early modern England. hup.harvard.edu/books/978067…

The Aron studies have seen some great handbooks recently, this one might be the best! Looking forward to reading it. A lucky timing as I am on the verge of completin my chapter on Aron.

Friendly note to academic job applicants: Be careful when converting Word files to pdfs. I have seen several cases this year where pdfs inadvertently included "Comments" that advisors, colleagues and friends made on draft materials.

New #openaccess article just dropped in the APSR! Leah Downey & yours truly on why people should stop using “democratize” when they really mean increasing market access. Looking at you, economists! 👀 Also, what would actual “democratization” look like when applied to finance?

Raymond Aron on French fears of the Americans (1951): “When they see the tin can replacing home cooking, Coke substituted for the noblest product of the soil (wine), the taste-destroying refrigerator threatening the extinction of the cellar, they grow properly alarmed.”

I am just a few pages in the paper but I think it would interest my friends working on tyranny, populism, bonapartism, illiberalism and the likes!

Replying to @Pangramed
