the ugly parade of useless chancellors is long, what still amazes is that the UK has stagnating economy, we have lower purchasing power globally like a frogs in a pan on the cooker most don't realise.
If you do what you have always done don't be surprised if you get the same result! ever increasing govt spending does NOT make us better off!
Switzerland govt spends 25% less than UK - is switzterland & the swiss poorer & worse than UK!!!
oh dear - here we have someone who can't do a simple check on google & comments on tax policy but does know who Laffer is - stick to Bluesky or get yourself an education
Well I am glad you agree some accounts do offer 5-6% .
Art Laffer ( on Merryn talks Money ) said all money coming into an account is income & related that to a v simple flat tax sub 15%

Can you give an example of where international spending has actually reduced illegal migration or even legal migration???? Even if you can why give aid to reasonably stable well functioning countries

Yup , Gordon Brown stopped indexation in 2008. Totally unreasonable

What ? You going to have to explain this one ! Firstly interest rates on saving ( currently around 5-6% ) & then profit - you are taxed on the interest you as a saver receive

Your JCB story is so right BUT remember every chilled & frozen food manufacturer & retailer has these massive electricity price to pass on to consumers that is every single consumer!!
Refrigeration plant runs 24/7

A rainy day can be you 🚗 breaking down , 2 friends recently had £4k repairs or loss of car. Rainy days cost these days plus interest rates are rising so a saver with a mortgage also needs more. Basic rate £1k allowance can be hit with £18k savings( only £9.3k higher rate) & that my friend is not a lot for a govt to whack you PLUS higher rate payers need same cushion as lower rate cos contracted outgoing likely to be same or more!! We should encourage saving NOT dependency on benefits

you lot can't help yourselves you just lie at every turn , cheap energy underpins every successful ( & a few corrupt) countries in the world yet Labour is "going for growth" & 'giving hope" with the highest energy cost in the world - it will not happen & you know it !

so you pay tax on your earning but do the right thing & put some aside for a rainy day in cash saving because you are risk averse then the govt taxes you again - there is becoming no point in saving especially if poorer because being on benefits or income support bring massive saving elsewhere - how many cany low income ppl would keep cash hidden but claim income support then get 100% council tax support / max housing benefit even mortgage support SMI etc etc + almost free entry to venues ie Tower of London saving £110 on a family ticket . This is all getting very very unfair

so depressing that a supposedly intelligent person can blatantly ignore the effects of the cultural revolution because of blind dogma - how can you be a academic & refuse to see the facts ! He was/is revered because of indoctrination & propaganda no other reason! 30-50M ppl died because of Mao - more than Stalin & Hitler combined!

this explains why the FT has declined in so many ways over the last 15yrs - they don't hire the best like they used to ie Liam Halligan .
BTW the comments in this thread say more about the low intellect of those that write them than you!
