A single morning settles the competitive stuff, but it takes decades to truly tell the full story of a season’s legacy and impact. So, a little disappointment now, memories forever, life change in the years ahead (hopefully).
We knew. The pieces were there. We were ready. We didn’t make the podium. Four teams were better. And it took all they had to keep us off.
I always pray that our time together during a season changes the lives of the young ladies who are part of it.
It never fails to change me.
The thing about XC is that it’s never a total surprise to those on the inside. The people who know, they know.
Early mornings.
Hot afternoons.
The heavy-breathing-punctuated quiet that settles in between reps during a big workout when things are clicking.
Or when they’re not.
The train finally got rolling on a trip to Columbia mid-season.
We sailed to a Conference victory.
Momentum was on our side.
Surprised a bunch of people by taking second at Districts.
Almost pulled the podium shocker at State.
2024 was by no means an easy season.
There were injuries early.
We couldn’t even get a team score at our season opening home meet because we were too banged up.
There was illness.
Frustrations lurked around every corner.
There were tears.
Lots of tears.
Some of them were mine.
