docs.google.com/document/d/1… #seed2023 notes. All talks, all questions. 65,000 words, but there's a table of contents with summaries to help you find things. Pardon typos - I haven't edited yet. Lot of cell therapy this year, lots of machine learning.

Funding agencies will get a lot of cool photos out of distributed foundries as well as cool photos of actual progress being made quickly.

Agencies like spending $ on foundries because the photos look cool. Split that $ across 100 labs and you will absolutely get more done, but no cool photos. So 😬. Let’s push for distributed foundries to get the best of both worlds :)

Here's a good chinese reseller that keeps prices low bc direct manufacturing relations. Lots of similar outfitd on Ali Baba and many on the easier Ali Express. We need procurement re-education, esp when buying the literal same product as OEM. joanlab.com/

But I feel like you don't value your own time and energy as a cost input here, maybe because of your personal truly bananas attitude toward and motivation around science. I would argue that even reagent/supply-cheap data is often expensive

I clicked False and you asked why so: We can now collect 1000s of datapoints for less $ than a grad student stipend. But certainly not all datasets are equally useful or impactful. It’s important to design those experiments tailored to the Q at hand. Random exps are wasteful.

If one could analyze open access datasets in silico then you wouldn't need a bunch of money.. but maybe that data is limited and/or all low hanging fruit have been picked

Blown out of the water by @ElowitzLab keynote at #seed2023. Crosstalk between signaling proteins in mammalian cells does computation - and is tuned by expression patterns dependent on cell type. 🤯Also a new mRNA export & delivery system. I'll be releasing my full notes Friday!

Can’t emphasize enough how impressive @ElowitzLab’s talk was on 2nd day of #SEED2023. As a frequent mRNA-LNP user, got excited to learn more about1) viral capsid & nanocage co-integ. for mRNA export & secretion,2) fusogen & MCP-MS2 system for cell-cell mRNA delivery,& 3) COURIER

New insight without new data is like becoming a movie star without looks or talent. It can happen but it's not a strategy you can count on.

I'm living proof that this take is total BS. You can collect good data for far less if we actually think for more than 30 seconds. It's easier to just throw money at things, if waste is the name of the game. Good science happens everywhere...including labs on a tight budget.

Why is there such a disparity between UI/UX in biotech versus tech? Is it because biology is inherently chaotic. Or do biologists just like bad software? I spent the memorial day weekend writing an article about this. Link in bio 👆 I am trying to circumvent the s-word ban

Systems integration is easier with open source because you can flexibly configure your own abstractions for the needs of your experimental platform. How does data feed back into your experimental decision making? Solving this problem is much easier with open source.

I just launched a fund-raising campaign for the experimental evolution robot! I wanna build a bunch for educators to test in their classroom and give students a handy tool to explore evolution in action. Please RT; every penny counts! 💚 experiment.com/projects/affo…

These are must watch talks for anyone working at the intersection of SW x Bio!
During our recent TechBio Forum, we hosted a fantastic series of lightning talks along with the @bitsinbio community. Super high information density make lightning talks one of our favorite formats, and these didn't disappoint! youtu.be/MwUqoa5r5es
