Next thing I know, I am coming to naked in my friend’s room, there’s a book shelf blocking the door and people are standing in the doorway asking if I am okay. I was so embarrassed that I said yeah get out, and then someone asked this man if he knew my name, he looked at me confused saying I never told him it, I said it was Katie, and then I blacked out again.

“She sings better than you,” he said at breakfast, pushing cereal around his bowl. I laughed. That year I laughed at everything, because the alternative was crying. My husband Rafael was on night shifts, and I was alone with Diego from dusk until dawn, running on four hours of broken sleep and coffee that no longer did anything.
“Where does she sing?”
“At night. When you’re standing in the hall.”
I don’t sleepwalk. I woke every morning in my own bed, sheets tucked tight, slippers lined up neatly at the foot. I told Diego it was a dream, and he shrugged in the way kids do when adults are being slow.
