I’m a big fan - but don’t become one of those people that cheer against innovation, and creating wonder in our world.
Imagine being stuck in traffic and you see a new Roadster next to you. The driver gives you a mischievous nod, flips a switch on the dash, cartwheels through the air, and dies in a horrible crash.

Software is over? Brandon Thomas, who describes himself as a software veteran with about 15 years in the industry and roughly a decade of work in Rust, is building the suite under the name Artcraft. He used Anthropic’s Claude Opus 4.5 to write the replacements in Rust. The set is meant to cover more than photo editing: Photocraft for Photoshop, Vectorcraft for Illustrator, Filmcraft for Premiere, Lightcraft for Lightroom, Effectcraft for After Effects, Designcraft for InDesign, and Printcraft for Acrobat Pro. The apps are free, with no subscription. Thomas says users can download the source, change it, and send fixes. He also says the project has a team behind it and will not be dropped after the announcement. On the timeline, he first said Artcraft would reach 100 percent parity with the Adobe apps within a month. In comments on Hacker News he pulled that back, while still saying 99 percent parity would take months rather than years. That gap between the claim and the current software is already visible. The apps are early, and people trying them have reported trouble with basic functions. They can resemble the Adobe programs they are named against, but the early reports do not describe them as ready replacements for tools that have been in professional use for years. Thomas ties the project to Adobe’s cancellation fees. In June 2024 the US government sued Adobe, alleging that the company hid early-termination charges and made subscriptions hard to cancel. Customers who ended certain annual plans early could be charged about half of the remaining payments. Adobe disputed that account and said its terms were clear and cancellation was straightforward. In March 2026 the company agreed to a $150 million settlement: $75 million in civil penalties and $75 million in free services for customers, plus clearer fee disclosures and an easier way to cancel. Adobe continued to deny wrongdoing. How seven free apps stay funded is a separate question. Thomas says Artcraft’s other business, selling tokens for AI image and video models, will help pay for development. He is also asking users to file bugs and contribute code. The legal exposure is left open. A suite that tracks Adobe’s products too closely is the sort of thing Adobe would be expected to notice, even if the public case against Adobe’s subscription practices has already been made in court and in the settlement. Existing free options already cover part of this ground, including GIMP, Krita, and Photopea for Photoshop-type work. Artcraft’s pitch is that an Adobe-like layout would make the switch easier, without the subscription or the cost of leaving early. Thomas expects other developers to do the same thing with other paid software. In his words, people can now make highly performant, cross-platform, clean-room equivalents that match the function of existing apps, and nothing is stopping them. He extends that to search, phones, and infrastructure, and to stripping ads out of software. The line he put on the project is the one in the headline: “Software is over.”

Went to the LA @bot Design event hosted by @sunrao. Was a great event, even used some of their gifted credits to make a D&D style world builder design bot. x.ai/bot/N21yaS0hjGDUnqERh6U… Then used the bot to make an active calendar in a D&D style tavern. Tasks as Quests. Patrons on whether people were home or not. All pulled from Chief of staff or assistant bots. Tavern music from Suno, and SFX from 11labs. Running locally hosted.

Had a massive set of @openclaw (I’m a fan) upgrade failures yesterday. But grok bots all running smoothly … every day I’m using them more and more.
We’re giving all @Grok @Bot users another free reset on token usage

The idea that all billionaires got their money by exploiting peopl doesn't hold up to any scrutiny. JK Rowling wrote books about cheeky wizards. I invented a better way to make virtual reality headsets and games to play on them. We just made things people wanted.

Hey Travis! Looking forward to your AI panel at GDC. The BGA will be there as with some game infra that's really relevant to live-service mobile. Would love to chat if you have a few minutes 🙂

It is hard to communicate how much programming has changed due to AI in the last 2 months: not gradually and over time in the "progress as usual" way, but specifically this last December. There are a number of asterisks but imo coding agents basically didn’t work before December and basically work since - the models have significantly higher quality, long-term coherence and tenacity and they can power through large and long tasks, well past enough that it is extremely disruptive to the default programming workflow. Just to give an example, over the weekend I was building a local video analysis dashboard for the cameras of my home so I wrote: “Here is the local IP and username/password of my DGX Spark. Log in, set up ssh keys, set up vLLM, download and bench Qwen3-VL, set up a server endpoint to inference videos, a basic web ui dashboard, test everything, set it up with systemd, record memory notes for yourself and write up a markdown report for me”. The agent went off for ~30 minutes, ran into multiple issues, researched solutions online, resolved them one by one, wrote the code, tested it, debugged it, set up the services, and came back with the report and it was just done. I didn’t touch anything. All of this could easily have been a weekend project just 3 months ago but today it’s something you kick off and forget about for 30 minutes. As a result, programming is becoming unrecognizable. You’re not typing computer code into an editor like the way things were since computers were invented, that era is over. You're spinning up AI agents, giving them tasks *in English* and managing and reviewing their work in parallel. The biggest prize is in figuring out how you can keep ascending the layers of abstraction to set up long-running orchestrator Claws with all of the right tools, memory and instructions that productively manage multiple parallel Code instances for you. The leverage achievable via top tier "agentic engineering" feels very high right now. It’s not perfect, it needs high-level direction, judgement, taste, oversight, iteration and hints and ideas. It works a lot better in some scenarios than others (e.g. especially for tasks that are well-specified and where you can verify/test functionality). The key is to build intuition to decompose the task just right to hand off the parts that work and help out around the edges. But imo, this is nowhere near "business as usual" time in software.

Games marketing is broken. After raising over $50M to support and work with hundreds of studios over the last 6 years, I find that the biggest problem is studios’ lack of direct connection with their players. Over the last six years, I’ve watched talented teams struggle because they never had a clear way to reach, learn from, and grow with players over time. Without that connection, everything becomes harder - validation, iteration, community growth, and retention all turn into guesswork. For most of the games industry’s history, platforms have controlled identity, communication, and distribution, which are invaluable to a game’s success. Apple limited how studios could collect and use player contact information outside the App Store, and Steam still doesn’t give studios access to the contact details of players who wishlist or sign up for playtests. Studios are left without a direct relationship with the audience they’re trying to serve. As a result, studios rely on fragmented tools and spreadsheets to manage players across different stages of development and live operations, with no continuity from first contact through long-term engagement. Today, that changes with the launch of FirstLook 1.0. FirstLook is the first Player Relationship Platform built specifically for games. It gives studios everything they need to connect with players across the full lifecycle, including playtests and feedback, community and communications, analytics, rewards, and creator programs, all in one place. We’ve been building under the radar, but FirstLook already powers hundreds of studios, from indies to publishers like Krafton, @ArenaNet, and @Skybound, connecting millions of players with the developers who make the games they love. As part of the launch, we’re introducing a brand new limited time free plan, with access to all our features for up to 500 players. You can set this up now in under 10 minutes. If you want to learn more, book a demo and we guarantee that you will save you time and money and help you grow. Links in comments!

I’m posting this as this individual is harassing and escalating. I’ve had no prior interaction with him. He has been attempting to terrorize our family and house in Manhattan Beach. He drives by every few days screaming obscenities at children, screaming “Nazi” and holding down his horn at all hours. While it’s annoying, I’ve let it pass. Particularly because he knows where we live (we park the truck outside). UNTIL. He recently escalated and crossed over the double yellow line driving his car at my two young girls and nanny in an attempt to “scare” them as they were exiting the @cybertruck . That of course crossed the line, in more ways than one. He’s so consistent (this is probably his 30th drive by in the last 5-6 weeks), that I’m able to predict when he would arrive. I set-up multiple high speed 4k cameras to catch him. Here is a video of his behavior (no expectation of privacy in public). You can hear him earlier in the video honking his horn at another @Tesla up the street. Interestingly a driver pulled over and volunteered that she was behind him for a while, and that he was doing this all the way from Culver & Nicholson (~10mi. or so). So he lives in Marina Del Ray and comes down through Manhattan harassing Tesla folks along the way. MY ASK: I’m going full court press with this. Sincerely not interested in Doxing this person (so please don’t). That said, I AM interested in other people that have likely been affected or targeted by this individual (I’ve already connected with one), and I know there are more. Please feel free to DM me. @WholeMarsBlog, @SawyerMerritt for visibility.
